I wouldn't get naked in front of just anyone simply because I'd be self conscious - it's nothing to do with prudishness. I hate the way that correlation is always imposed on people in this debate.
Sex and nudity can be separated anyway - I think it actually seems quite immature to be unable to see the two independently of each other.

If people want to embrace being publicly naked though, more power to them - neither party is more right than the other.

But is catholic repression even relevant any more to generations that were born here from the 60s (maybe even 50s) onwards? The British have similar attitudes towards nudity - that isn't even a catholic country.

i agree with you on the stigma left over from the catholic era about nudity/sex. But as for the brits being similar to us i'd have to disagree. The younger generation in britain are far more liberal than their irish counter parts. Just look at the amount of nudity in their newspapers, tv, magazines etc etc. As a society, they dont seem to care about it. Whereas in ireland, there was a bit of a furore when that trinity chic got her boobs out, or the porn wagon went around ireland last year.

This maybe slightly off the topic of nudity and more to do with sex and nudity, but you get my point, irish people are still amazed/shocked by nudity

I always thought the furore she had a first in Biochemistry and was getting her tits out as a career/a bit of extra cash or to try and get "famous" (not the nicest looking girl in class IMO, certainly not in that year of Science). Rather than it being some Irish girl getting half naked

But there isn't a culture of public nudity in Britain like elsewhere in Europe. Stuff like Nuts and Zoo etc is very popular here and not that much of a deal.

Fair point on the public nudity thing, the europeans are much more nonchalant when it comes to nudity.
As for the lads mags, if it was full of Irish girls, do you still think it wouldnt be much of a deal over here??

Visited Tokyo last year and tried out the hot spas. They were sex-segregated and very strict on no swimwear being worn in the waters.

It was a pleasant experience and relaxing. Nothing uncomfortable it at all and you could see groups of friends sitting around chatting. I can't imagine many people here heading to the spa with their mates instead of a pub but I'd recommend it if you're over that side of the world.

It's just somethign a bit different from going to the pub for your socail life all the time. Nothign agaisnt it, but a little variety andsomething different can't be a bad thing.

The whole naturism thing is a little bit "Third Reichish" for me and I find it interesting that the movement sprung from the same era and locations that gave us fascism.
Clothes have developed into a lot more than just something to keep us warm-we cover up our lower halves as a sign that we aren't just animals who sh1t, piss and fuck.
I don't buy the whole prudish Irish thing either-are continental males different that they don't get turned on by naked women?

I don't remember Finland ever having a first or second reich, let alone a third one. Perhaps you could expand?

I don's know if it's prudish or not, but Irish people are just not as comfortable or natural in the company of other naked people, especially not those of the opposite gender. It's either "I'd get excited!" or "all that flesh hanging out" which gives me the impression that you don't know how to conduct yourself in the that kind of comany. It does strike me as childrish though.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Yes, continental men get turned on by naked women that is a fact. The difference is the context of the encounter, in saunas men do not get aroused in my experience. Associating naturism with fascism is not a serious arguement, you can associate many things with fascism using this logic

**** it anyway! I spent a whole WEEK in finland and never heard about the nudie saunas :(

I was talking about this with some friends when one of them arrived for a barbecue at my place completely shirtless. Obviously because he is Australian nobody seemed to take much notice, you know, practically their national costume.

Anyway we were talking about why Irish people wouldn't dress like this and the general concensus was that although we are an island nation, we are neither particularly fond of the seaside nor exposed to warm weather a lot, meaning we tend not to take our shirts off very much, meaning that perhaps we are more concerned with our faces than the appearance of our bodies.

I know some guys my age who girls would say are attractive yet they have really neglected to take care of their bodies and are now growing bitch tits or developing bellies. I think this may be related to our climate, indoor lifestyle, and lack of beach culture.

I would suggest also that the reason this is less of an issue for continental Europeans which share climates similar to ours, is that they may, for language reasons or cultural reasons, be less exposed to what has been historically an American/ British preoccupation with appearance, or a self awareness of appearance that may not be as prevalent in, say, Finland or Germany.

    Just a possibility.

Ok, maybe they don't have boners in the sauna or on the beach but I can guarantee their **** bank is full with busty 18 year old volleyball players.

I stand by my point that naturism arose from the same imaginary ideals and deliberate misinterpretation of history, philosophy and race that led to fascism.

From the wiki page: (warning, contains pictures of naked people)
The naturist philosophy has several sources, many of which can be traced back to the health and fitness philosophy in Germany in the early 20th century
Hans Surén taught nude gymnastics to soldiers for five years, and on being forced to leave the army, he wrote in 1924, Mensch und die Sonne (Men and the Sun) which ran to 61 reprints.[49] Later, in 1936, Surén proposed physical exercise and naturism as a means of creating a pure German race and of beauty
Heinrich Pudor wrote on methods to improve social hygiene in his book Nackende Menchen und Jauchzen der Zukunft (Naked people and the future of Mankind) and then Nacktkultur (The cult of the nude). It prescribes an austere lifestyle and nudity

I'd love to go to a nude sauna/beach/pool but if im been honest there is no way i could, simple reason,iv'e never sat around with a bunch of naked people and just talked about the weather and stuff, there is no way i could sit among strangers,ugly/fine/skinny/fat and not get a raging hard on.
Im a pervert at heart and no one is taking that from me,so its best i stay away.

They don't have boners correct. You are making assumptions about what people are thinking, I don't know what they are thinking but I reckon this must reflect your thought process, you sound pretty frustrated talking about 18 year olds and **** etc.

    Your argument of:

    fascism is bad
    fascists like naturism
    naturism is bad

    is not logically sound.

Logical fallacy alert. Maybe it is interesting, but it means nothing, and cannot be used as an argument against nudity.

Are you the kind of person who says 'oh dear, modern medicine! I find it interesting that your treatment for this disease came from the same era and locations that gave us fascism'?

We are just animals who sh!t, piss and fuck. Maybe we just so happen to have evolved great intelligence but we are ultimately ruled by our instincts.

Clothes look good and keep us warm. That's all.

Naturism is a very liberal persuit, I really don't think you can say the same abotu Facism.

The fact thay you thought that they got boners or go to saunas to fill their - as you put it - "**** bank" really shows hom misinformed you are.
