Good read. I was more shocked by the fact SI have over 40 staff, they’rr a really poor NGB st times.

No sign of guidance yet on lane loadings, physical distancing in pools during training, etc from them. The US, UK, Dutch and Germans have issued guidance to clubs on tbis. SI can’t leave it up to individual clubs to decide this, there’d be clubs who would put in place strong measures and those that would take the p!ss - I know of one club that kept swimming after training was banned by SI.

There may be clubs that don’t come back. If you have to restrict pool numbers too much then it won’t be financially viable to run sessions and cover pool hire and coaching costs. Added to that if clubs can’t engage in fundraising via things like supermarket bag packs and running their own galas many will be gone. It’s not a good place at the minute.

How can one physically distance themselves while swimming in a pool in tight lanes? Is it really needed in a pool? or is the concern more groups of people, being trained, standing beside each other in a pool, rather than solo swimming?

Also, any links to international guidance on this?

    Thanks.

Thanks. One would wonder how far things really need to go in a pool which is one of the safest forms of exercise indoors in terms of low risk of getting Covid-19 as the WSJ reported.

Next week pools reopen in Italy. It seems excessive that we have to wait until 20 July for pools to reopen and some might not reopen until 10 August because gyms cannot open until 10 August.

Has anyone heard any definitive date for any pools reopening?

Attended a Swim Ireland webinar this morning on return to swimming. They haven't issued any specific guidance, are looking at other countries to see how they fare before issuing specifics. What they did recognise was that swimming clubs will be financially unviable in 2m SD swimming lanes, and have sought advice on the need to SD in a chlorinated environment.

Other than that, any likely return is probably see:
    - limited numbers in lanes, no overtaking, front crawl only
    - everyone in a lane to have a "home point" (wall, flags, 12.5m marker...) and start/finish there during sets
    - snorkels may be used more, other swim aids used less (nowhere to store them)
    - issue of SI clubs organising club OW training was brought up, and generally not well received by SI (different safety considerations, potential technique changes, etc)

Overall I'd say if you are in a club, any return to water will not be a return to the normal swimming you knew! If you are an adult of a club member, recognise that your club swim committee will need all the help they can get over the coming year or two- swimming is going to get more expensive so be prepared to help out with the coming bag-packing/fundraising days!
