The part VIII planning application was submitted to Tralee Town Council for the Tralee urban part of the route.

And they haven't been idle in the meantime. Pipe-laying on the track is now almost finished:

It's the fact that it hasn't been abondoned that protects the line from squatters. Well legally speaking anyway if not in practice.

    Just spotted on radiokerry.ie/news:

Limerick rail-trail to be extended to Kerry border

Efforts to extend the Great Southern Trail from Limerick to Kerry have received a boost.
€290,000 is to be spent on the extension by Limerick County Council
The disused railway is being gradually redeveloped as a recreational walking and cycling track.
Group walks are regularly held along the 22-mile stretch from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale.
The new fund will see the track extended to the Kerry border at Barnagh.
The Great Southern Trail committee has welcomed the new grant and expressed its hope that Kerry County Council would develop the trail in Kerry.
The disused line runs through Kilmorna, Listowel, Lixnaw, Abbeydorney, Ardfert and Traleee.
It links up with the Tralee-Fenit line which is being developed as a greenway walk.

    Great news!

i'v been following the discussion on the Tralee- Limerick line for a while. Several times it has been referred to as an abandoned line. To my knowlege for a rail line to be abandoned CIE has to advertise in the local papers that they are abandoning the route. When this happens adjoining land owners are entilted to take over the land.

In the case of the Limerick - Tralee line far from abandoning the line CIE a number of years ago laid a fibre optic cable along the old line which as far as I know is still active

actually the line has been abandoned..and it came very close to going back to the landowners..too close for comfort..it came down to meeting between limerick county council/landowners/iarnoid eireann and the great southern trail ...to sign off the property..intense pressure from irish farming organisations created this..anyway the decision was put on hold for a few months...and low and behold a gentleman called Denis o brien came on the scene with a proposal to put a fibre optic cable under the bed of the line from limerick to tralee...this happened some weeks after the big meeting with all the stakeholders of the line...iarnoad eireann got compensation for the cable and as the saying goes money talks...following that a preservation order now is on the line....IT CAME OH SO CLOSE TO BEING LOST...

    TO SIMPLIFY THIS PREVIOUS COMMENT...
THE LINE HAS INDEED BEEN ABANDONED.
THE RAILWAY FORMATION IS STILL OWNED BY IARNOAD EIREANN..
A PRESERVATION ORDER NOW EXISTS FOR THE RAILWAY FORMATION.
THE PROPERTY BETWEEN BOTH DITCHES OF THE ONCE RAILWAY...:D..

Hi Trail Man, that is indeed true. I wonder what the legal situation is with individuals gaining squatters' rights on this line is though, must look into that. The Tralee/Fenit line is completely protected as it has never been formally abandoned. I know of a number of illegal incursions onto the Tralee/Limerick line in Kerry which are being completely ignored, fibre optic cable or not!

  • Registered Users Posts: 203 ✭✭trail man

    well its complicated somewhat..
squatters are a problem..for sure..Technically they have no rights to the line..IN AN IDEAL world iarnoad eireann would take these people on and get the off the line..That wont happen..as they dont want to get any bad publicity..now if the county council were to take control in total of line
as technically they are the only group that can..Then thats a different kettle of fish..WOULD THE COUNCIL HAVE THE BOTTLE TO TAKE THEM ON ????.
or shame them off the line by regularly highlighting the problem in the media....

    That is great news,
Hopefully Kerry County Council will row in behind this 100% seen as it is an objective of the county development plan.

Unfortunately KCC have yet to even take on the squatters on the Fenit line so I won't be holding my breath that we'll see any progress on the Limerick line any time soon. Still, the extension to the county border creates added impetus for the remaining missing piece of the jigsaw to be completed but I think it will only take concerted public pressure to shame KCC into action.

Fortunately, local elections are coming up in 2014 so councillors will be getting increasingly sensitive to local public demands over the next 2 years...

Unfortunately the sensitive to local public demands that they seem to bow to quickest is the 1 voter who wants small garden extension rather than the 1000's who will benefit from the re-opening of these routes !

Is now the time to plan a postcard or e-mail campaign to local councillors to let them know how many people are supporting the opening of the two rail lines for walking / cycling? These are the people who will be pushing themselvs forward for the photo shoots when the Rock St. to Mounthawk section opens.

We could always name individuals, especially those in business in Tralee and demand that the councils do not deal with them until they vacate the line.:D

Go ahead for first section of Tralee Fenit walk and cycleway

The first section of the Tralee Fenit walk and cycleway has been given the go ahead. Councillors at Tralee Town Council last night voted to give the green light to the construction of the footpath and cycleway along the old rail line between Rock Street and Bracker O'Regan Road, Tralee. It's hoped funding will be available to develop it next year. The project involves the development of a walk and cycleway along the old railway line between Tralee and Fenit. It's being jointly developed by Tralee Town Council and Kerry County Council. There's been some opposition from some landowners along the railway line regarding the development. Plans for this section, between Rock Street and Bracker O'Regan Road Tralee, went out on public consultation, and 221 submissions were made in support of it. The council has since redesigned the car park on Rock Street, which will be one of three access points to the path. There will also be access between Rock Park Avenue and Brendan's Park, and at the Bracker O'Regan Road. Tralee Town Manager Michael McMahon says while there's currently no funding in place, the council has made an application, and he's confident the council will be successful in its application in 2013.

    Well what opposition ?
The submission received 221 individual submission plus a number from groups/organisations, from these only one was opposed to the plan, and at that that objector was not objecting to the greenway itself, but saying that it should be reopened as a railway, [which would be great but I can't see that happening any time soon.]

This is case in point, this project has been delayed for years due to the rumours that there is opposition to the plan, if there is opposition why did they not not make themselves heard ?

It hasn't been built yet, but the walkway will eventually follow the old railway line to Fenit, which basically connected the train station in Tralee with what is now the playground in Fenit. The first stage of the walkway will start in Rock Street between Kingdom Motor Factors and Horan's Fruit and will connect to Bracker O'Regan Road just behind the Mounthawk Secondary School. You can already walk that part.

He's right in one way, once it goes 'Greenway' (hate the term but what can you do) it will be unlikely to go back to rail use, but on the other hand it's too short for a preserved line, goes nowhere, has no supporters apart from the now inoperational Great Southern Rly Pres. Society in the 80's (not to be confused with the G.S. Trail) and is of no commercial use to CIE/IE.

We're carrying out some works along the route including building block walls at the rear of some of the properties in Rockpark Avenue where they back onto the line. We'll also be erecting some fencing as part of the works.

Just so long as the finished project isn't too sterile with high block walls everywhere.

Also graffitti 'artists' find it harder to put 'artworks' on fencing.

True. The block walls are for the back gardens for the residents of Rockpark Avenue. To be fair to them, railings wouldn't work along there for them.

It would be our intention to do some landscaping along by the block walls to 'soften' them.

Any idea of when construction might begin?

What would be the situ with the Castleisland branch (Gortatlea-Castleisland)

AFAIK it was closed in the 70's and lifted in the 80's, is the trackbed still owned by IE?

Might be another contender for a walking trail.
