Just seen that there is another walk planned for tomorrow on the old Tralee-Fenit railline, would be great to see this project come to fruitition !

That was some action packed Sunday stroll, it had something for everyone; stand-offs, manned barricades, barbed-wire defenses, JCB action, Gardaí, Santa, kid playing in puddles, dogs making new friends and not to forget the free tae and buns !

Second option! Genuinely surprised they havent been nicked, or that the rail crowd didnt take them.

It was a mainline route, so standard gauge, according to wikipedia that is 1,600 mm (5 ft 3 in)

Yes, despite ankle deep mud and a hail shower the turnout again was great, and it was well worth the effort. We even made it on the front page of today's Kerryman The situation was fairly tense when the crowd reached the barricades, but thanks to a little help from the friendly Gardaí all stayed more or less peaceful. I think the next walk will be decisive and I encourage everybody to join in. The date for that will surely be published here...

Aw come on now, you would come across as very selfish if you were to say that you wish to stop a 8 mile walkway which would be of benefit to 1000's of people in your community just so you can extend you back garden by a couple of feet !

If there are gardens extended out into the line its surely illegal to have done so?

I think you are correct, but the Land Owner [CIE/IR] are the one who have to tackle them on it.

The heart of the issue here is that the barricaders think they have squatters rights on the line. The key party here is CIE - until they own up to their repsonsilities it seems that this will be ongoing. It is a National issue and not just a local one as if they decide here it will set a precedent for other disused lines.
From my dealings with CIE things don't happen in a hurry; a bit like all the other organs of the State.

Also I can't for the life of me understand why every business and tourist promotion agency/group are not all over this.

According to Failte Ireland a route of similar length in Mayo was worth €7.2 million to the local economy. And that was in Mayo, this is Kerry #1 tourist destination in Ireland !!

The mind boggles...

We look forward to as many of you as possible participating in our Christmas Walk from Newcastle West to Rathkeale on Tuesday Dec.27th. at 1p.m.[WEATHER PERMITTING].

Assembly is at the Old Station, Bishop Court, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick and the 8 mile[13km] journey will take about three hours. Walkers joining at Ardagh Station should commence at 2p.m.

The newly completed extension at Castlematrix, Rathkeale now enables a safe crossing under the N21 River Deel bridge and the provision of this link (and a similar one at Barnagh) by Limerick Co. Co. under the 'SMARTER TRAVEL PROGRAMME' is to be commended.

Why not invite the John Murray Show on Radion 1 to have one of their organised walks on the Line. Plenty of publicity there.

Did a section of the Wesport to Achill route last month. 4 of us went specially down to travel the route so it is worth money to the local economy.

Happy New Year !

It is great that we can bring such good news in the first post of the year. Following negotiations CIE have given Kerry County Council the authority to act on their behalf in dealing with the redevelopment of the line and any issues that may arise.

As you may be aware clearance work on the line began in late 2010 but later stalled. These works were required to allow Kerry County Council’s engineers to survey the line in order to prepare plans for the line.

Since then Kerry County Council were awaiting permission from CIE to act on their behalf.

We have been informed that Kerry County Council staff are now progressing plans for the line.

Hopefully it will not be long before we see this amenity come to fruition !

That's great news alright Amadain, let hope there is some action on it soon, apparently is in not a huge job, so if all goes according to planned if it could quite possibly be open for the summer.

Also just to let you know that there is a thread about this already

It is critical that the "authority" given to the council will stand up in a court of law otherwise the project will stall again. it will be a great facility for North Kerry if/when it is completed.

Seen as the biggest stumbling block has now been sorted [CIE awarding KCC a licence] hopefully the next walk will be the official opening !

That said, it is state owned land so you could walk it whenever you want @amadain, you might need welly's tho'

Hi guys am sure that they tried very hard...
for the record we dont have any preserved railway in the republic..you have to go to northern ireland for such a treat..
The limerick to tralee line was offered up to them all those years ago but they considered it too rural....and not worth preserving...

Fair play to all involved in this, it's a pity it all didn't work out. I was only a young fella when this all took place thus had little real idea of what was going on in the background, so that post you linked to was very insightful.

I had thought that the project was driven locally so it was a surprise that most of those involved were living far from Fenit/Tralee.

Just a quick question, you mention an engine (a Ruston) ending up in Clonakilty, was that located in Fenit for a while, I seem to remember an engine on the platform/plinth opposite the West End

That's the same engine that is now in Clonakilty - it came out of the sugar factory in Mallow. The Great Southern Railway Preservation Society were also involved in the Blennerville project but were pushed out by local vested interests and we all know what happened to that railway. Perhaps it too can become a greenway?

Council to start clearance work on section of Tralee-Fenit Railway Line
25/02/2012

Kerry County Council will be starting clearance works today, Friday, February 24th on a stretch of the Fenit Railway line from Rock Street to Bracker O'Regan Road, Mounthawk.

The works will involve the cutting back of the trees and undergrowth, back to the railway boundary, along with the removal of rubbish and debris. The work, which is being carried out by Kerry County Council staff is expected to continue until next Friday.

In some cases, the clearance works may see some residential properties along the route have their properties exposed. In these cases, Kerry County Council will be working with the owners to secure the property.

"There will be some properties where the clearance works will expose their property," a Council spokesperson stated. "Where that happens, security fencing will be immediately erected to protect their property and we will be putting more permanent boundaries in place afterwards.

"We will be speaking to those residents during the next few days and those who have queries are asked to contact Kerry County Council's Roads Department on 066 7183588 or email: roads@kerrycoco.ie

The clearance works will allow the Council to prepare detailed drawings and costings for works along the route relating to the proposed Tralee-Fenit walkway.

"We are currently finalising a number of issues and hope to be in a position to start the Part 8 Planning Process in relation to the Rock Street to Mounthawk section of the walkway in the next few weeks," the spokesperson said.

Very interesting but as I understand it the NTA have serious reservations about the walkway given that the Tralee/Fenit line is still part of the National rail network - it has never been closed.
