    Every rail line has competition , the fact remains Rail is NOT a business, it cannot stand on its own two feet ecumenically.

    That would be an economic matter.

    how is the line " protected ", funds for the barrow bridge dry up at the end of this year for example

    They will be next month, my comment was in relation to a post earlier that the station move and IE would make sure Rosslare could never operate again.

    Not sure what you mean about Barrow Bridge funds drying up, they have drying up a long time ago and only necessary work is carried out from time to time on the bridge.

    Goverment to officially announce 60 million in infrastructure funding on Friday as part of N Quays investment which was needed to partly fund the station move/roads. All plans are just awaiting An Bord Pleanala final sign off on framework by April with construction expected to start in 2019.

    Two platform, buses interchange and finished product in ways like London Kings Cross.

    will they have enough in 2 platforms? i know waterford's heavy days are long gone but didn't they used to use more then 2 before the landslide a few years ago?

    ticking a box on a form does not make you of a religion.

    Can't say for sure but waiting to get more detailed plans hopefully soon.

    They really only used 2 platforms, one for Dublin and the other for Limerick J, the other platform and siding next to the main were storing trains overnight. All stock moved to Sallypark at night now.

    How can a two platform station on the banks of the Suir be compared to King's Cross?

    Concept wise in terms of a major retail center, interchange and plaza element.

    Waterford City & County Council have approved planning for rock face reinforcement to enable passenger services pass through the station. Hard to believe it happened in 2013.

    Signal Box
    “Remedial works consisting of a combination of rock face stabilisation and railway protection works in the form of rock fall protection systems and drainage measures to approximately 400 metres of rock face located immediately to the north of Plunkett Railway Station in the townland of Ferrybank, Waterford. A protected Irish Rail signal box (Recorded Protected Structure, RPS 571) may require to be taken down and stored off site in the interest of avoiding accidental damage, such determination, if required will be made prior to the commencement of the stabilisation works

    Meanwhile road access to N Quays and proposed station have been approved.

    Why is the signal box a protected structure?

    No idea but its a unique structure in Ireland.

    Only one that sits over the running lines, so I'm told.

    The final plan for SDZ will be submitted to Waterford Co Co by end of June and construction on the N Quays will start in November provided Goverment lives up to their funding commitments. Project will be completed between June 2022-November 2022. Unclear if for example they will move once completed or wait until full build to finish.

    Apparently some minor issues with IE but expected to be resolved imminently.

    * 2 Through Platform (200m long)
    * Double Track approach
    * New Signalling System
    * Station will sit above the platforms which has been designed based on British Network Rail standards to "comfortably" accommodate 600 passengers in the concourse (both arr/dep)
    * Station will be 11,500m2 (Concourse 1,200m2)
    * Projected Construction April 20-March 22.

    Briefly heard David Cullinane TD on WLR news saying there's a problem with money for the project..... Radio signal was poor where I was listening.

    Those involved with the project don't appear to concerned about the funding and have been assured it will be announced over time. Most of it doesn't directly relate to the transport hub. While it the NTA and IE will have to fund the signalling which is due to happen anyway given the age of existing.

    what's the scope of this? In 2015 you mentioned some renewals as well: http://www.railusers.ie/forum/showpost.php?p=75532&postcount=14 although there was some subsequent mention of additional works needing doing.

    Am curious as to what IE activities will seemingly continue at Plunkett.

    Would think an upgrade to CTC like Limerick recently.

    Not sure what will continue but might refer to upstairs in current station where Bus Eireann have offices.

    Won't they need to take on a load of clerical/management staff to operate the new station?

    If this new station is built, will there be a new bridge right beside it going over the Suir to the city centre? I think I remember hearing something about a new bridge in Waterford, but I can't remember the details.

    It would save a lot of money if the line was closed south of Kilkenny especially since CIE plan to close Limerick Junction/Waterford as soon as they can.

    Yes a bridge is planned to current bus station for buses and pedestrians. Planning for that is with An Bord Pleanala

    Can you link to where CIE plan to close the LJ/Waterford line please?

    I really don't agree with the proposals to close the Limerick Junction - Waterford line. Clonmel has a similar population to Wexford or Sligo, so I think that keeping it connected to Dublin by train(with a change in either Waterford or Limerick Junction) while giving it a faster and more frequent service would make it busy enough to be safe from closure.
    However, I won't dwell too much on this topic as it isn't directly relevant to this thread.

    The trains from Kilkenny will be bursting when the NQP is open :)

    Unfortunately Limerick J has given the IE the headache of the fastest growing route (% terms) in 2018 with numbers up 17.6% :)
