Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    I've been looking at trains on the live tracker and hoping to find out a bit more about them.
    For example E120 or E238 are Darts.
    D812 is a Commuter, so is the D designation just for commuters?
    P712 is travelling from Drogheda to Connolly, so is this a different type of train to the commuters?

    Is it possible to find out more about this designations? Are they tied to the fleet numbers at all? Do they follow any particular sequence at all?

    Both D & P are commuter services but they have different destinations ids.

    The key part to reading the IDs is reading the first digit in combination with the letter.
    The letter will denote the type of service (this does not necessarily correspond to the type of stock that may be on that service), the first digit then denotes the destination.

    D = Diesel Commuter outer destinations
    1=Greystones
    2=Heuston / Kildare
    3=M3 Parkway
    4= GCD / Kildare
    8=Drogheda / Dundalk
    9=Maynooth / Longford

    P = Diesel Commuter inner destinations
    2=Heuston / Kildare
    3= Docklands
    4= GCD / Kildare
    5=Lansdowne Road
    6=Pearse
    7=Connolly
    8=Malahide
    9=Howth

    E=Dart
    1= Greystones
    2=Bray
    4= Dun Laoghaire
    5= Lansdowne Road
    6=Pearse
    7=Connolly
    8=Malahide
    9=Howth

    A= Mainline Passenger
    B= Mainline passenger special
    H= Heritage
    K=Liner (hazardous materials)
    M=Mineral
    S= Liner or timber trains
    W= Per way trains
    Y = Per way machines
    1=Belfast
    2=Cork
    3=Tralee
    4= Limerick
    5=Waterford
    6=Rosslare
    7=Galway
    8=Westport/Ballina
    9=Sligo

    In general the direction of the mainline train is indicated by the last digit, odd= Down, even=up.

    That is not a full list of codes but it will give you a good start.
