I've just started this service in the Edmund Rice Youth and Community Centre on Manor St., every Tuesday from 11.30AM to 3PM. Anyone aged 25 and under who is currently unemployed is welcome to attend, we've got pool tables, table football, Wii, XBox, WiFi, board games, and all going well, we can open up the café during it too. And it's free to attend!

Today was the first session, and for the initial couple of weeks I'll simply be opening up the games room as a place for people to hang out, socialise, and laze around. :) Beyond that, I'll be carrying out some needs assessment and providing whatever job-hunting supports the centre can accommodate.

I realise that some job seekers spend a lot of their free time sending out applications, going to interviews, looking into education and upskilling opportunities and so forth. So if all you want to do is come in, hang out, and forget about all that, that's perfectly fine too! The drop-in will be shaped entirely by the interests and aims of the people who use it.

I hope this is useful to some of ye. Cheers for reading!
    Steve

That is a fantastic idea and I hope it turns into a regular area for young unemployed people to chill out, talk to fellow jobseekers or even use the wifi to help them in job searches etc, good luck with it.

Brilliant idea. We all know how stressful and tiring it can be spending most of your day/week searching for work. Wish you best of luck with the project.

    Great job Sunshine!

Would it be a bad idea to allow college students in on this too? You could round them all up together and ask the software developers to make a website for whatever you're wanting to call this effort. They could also work on their group projects over the summer, or could just use this service to meet other developers and talk shop.

I'm sure this is applicable to other disciplines too, but I'm a software dev myself so wouldn't know.

It'd also be a great opportunity for non-college youths to find out more about college courses/careers that they might be interested in by talking to students. You could even start training sessions!

Yeah college students are welcome too! It'd be great to get some information on courses straight from the people involved in them.

    Hi Steve
Great idea and well over due in the area ,
Quick question is it open to early school leavers 15-17 not entitle to sign on yet ?
I run a youth club in the city would have a few members who fall into this category and would be great to be able to inform them of this vicinity .
