    sick bastards

    http://www.donegaldaily.com/2012/05/25/why-sick-vandals-wreck-late-gardas-plaque-and-dump-it-at-girlfriends-house/

Sick vandals attacked a memorial plaque erected to a Garda killed in the line of duty in Co Donegal and then dumped it outside his grieving girlfriend’s house.

Gardai say they are disgusted by the attack on the plaque put up in Burt by the heartbroken family of the late Garda Gary McLoughlin.

The 24 year old Garda died when he was struck by a car on December 14th, 2009.

Criminal Martin McDermott, who had more than 80 convictions when he killed Garda McLoughlin, was later sentenced to seven years for his manslaughter.

The plaque was erected at the scene of Gary’s death at Lisfannon, Burt by his family last year.

The plaque reads simply “For some moments in life there are no words.”

However Gardai believe that on Monday night or early Tuesday morning last the plaque was smashed into different pieces.

One of the pieces was then taken more than 25 kms away to the late Garda McLoughlin’s girlfriend Shauna Bradley’s home at Drumfries outside Buncrana.

The vandals left the piece of the plaque on the bonnet of a disused car belonging to a family member and also sprayed ‘RIP’ on the piece of the plaque.

Garda Superintendent Kevin English told Highland Radio’s Shaun Doherty Show he and all members of An Garda Siochana have been left ‘sickened and disgusted’ by the mindless attack.

“I have no words to adequately describe what happened – it was sick, vile and sinister in the extreme and it has caused untold hurt to the family of Gary, the community and all his colleagues.

“It is a depraved act carried out by people who have no respect for anyone and it is a direct attack on Gary, his family and An Garda Siochana,” he said.

Supt English revealed he has been in touch with the late Garda McLoughlin’s family including his dad Noel and mum Una.

He said they are devastated by what has happened and cannot understand why someone has done this to the memory of their youngest son.

Earlier this month the McLoughlin family travelled from their native Fenagh in Co Leitrim to receive a posthumous honour from Donegal County Council in memory of Gary.

Garda Supt English said he doesn’t know how much the McLoughlin family can take.

“These people not only removed the plaque but also sprayed graffiti on it. I don’t know how anyone can stoop so low. I don’t known how much more this family can take.

“They have endured the loss of their son, a criminal trial and then the escape of Martin McDermott. All they ask is time to grieve for their unnecessary loss.

“There are no words to describe it. I have never experienced such an act. They now find themselves plunged into further grief.

“They are deeply, deeply hurt and are totally confused as to why someone would want to inflict such pain on them,” he said.

The leading Garda vowed that everything will be done to track down the people who carried out the depraved act.

“I have no doubt in my mind that the majority of people in Buncrana and Donegal will be repulsed by this.

“They have been very supportive to the McLoughlin family and no effort will be spared by us to bring the perpetrators who done this to justice.

“I would ask people to come forward and I am confident that whoever did this is from the local community. They knew what additional hurt and pain they were going to cause by doing this,” he said.

    http://www.herald.ie/news/courts/couple-charged-over-spate-of-knife-raids-ramming-garda-car-29189804.html

A DUBLIN couple suspected of robbing €1,300 in cash from two video shops while armed with knives have been remanded in custody for one week.

Patrick Dunne (25) and Annmarie Byrne (29) were arrested after officers pursued a stolen vehicle which rammed a garda car in west Dublin, a court heard.

A third woman, Linda Dunne (39), was arrested after she was allegedly seen getting out of the stolen car.

Judge David McHugh refused bail and remanded all three in custody to appear before Blanchardstown court next Wednesday.

A court heard Annmarie Byrne is seven weeks pregnant. Judge McHugh ordered that she receive medical treatment while in custody.

    Knives

Patrick Dunne, of no fixed abode, and Byrne, of Streamville Road, Kilbarrack, appeared before Blanchardstown District Court charged with robbing Xtravision in Ongar Village on April 6, 2013, and robbing Xtravision, Blanchardstown Shopping Centre, on April 7.

It is alleged an iPhone, worth €600, and a total of €1,300 in cash was stolen in the two robberies.

Byrne is further charged with possession of knives for use in a robbery and with possession of knives at Aldemere, Clonsilla, on April 8.

Dunne is also accused of trespass at Allendale Square, Clonsilla, on April 8, using a stolen motor vehicle, possession of knives and three counts of dangerous driving at Grange Road and Clonsilla Road.

Mother-of-three Linda Dunne, of Fortlawn Avenue in Blanchardstown, is charged with being a passenger in a stolen car, possession of knives and possession of knives for use in a robbery, all at Aldemere on April 8.

Gardai objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the charges and the strength of the evidence.

The court heard the trio were arrested after gardai gave chase to a stolen car allegedly driven by Patrick Dunne which rammed and caused damage to a patrol car.

    Arrested

Garda Paul Oates claimed a broken knife, which was found in the car, matched a piece left behind at one of the robberies.

Garda Padraic Brennan claimed officers saw Linda Dunne in the car, and she was arrested a short distance away after she tried to evade gardai.

She told gardai "I didn't know it was stolen" after she was charged.

Byrne said the "knife wasn't mine" after she was charged.

Her solicitor Aoife Bambury asked a judge to grant her bail, saying Byrne is pregnant and has a one-year-old child and is needed at home to care for the child.

Gardai also alleged that the three are drug users and that Byrne and Patrick Dunne committed the robberies to feed their addictions.

Ms Bambury and solicitor John O'Doherty both said the accused would abide by any bail conditions, including a curfew and sign on condition.

Judge McHugh refused bail and remanded them in custody to appear before Blanchardstown court next week.

Gardaí cleared of assault but face €14k bill

    Wednesday, January 08, 2014

Representatives of rank-and-file gardaí have launched an attack on the Ombudsman Commission after two members were left to pay their own legal bills after being cleared of assaulting a violent teenager whose own mother described him as “an absolute gurrier of the highest order”.

    By Sean O’Riordan
The two gardaí face a combined legal bill of €14,000 because the State is refusing to pay their costs. The Garda Representative Association (GRA) also said thousands of euro was wasted during the case against two of its Cork city-based members.

The GRA criticised the manner in which the Garda Siochána Ombudsman Commission pursued the case against them and the State’s refusal to pay their costs.

Gardaí Brendan Dowling and Fiona Sheehan, who have a combined 30 years of service, had to wait 18 months to be cleared of using excessive force by pepper-spraying a self-admitted violent teenager with 22 previous convictions including assaults.

The State dropped the case against them at Cork District Court on Monday after the teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons, admitted being the ringleader of a violent attack by a gang of youths on Paul Street Shopping Centre on May 2, 2012.

The court heard the gardaí had in fact showed extraordinary restraint in how they dealt with the then 16-year-old that night.

GRA central executive committee member Mick Corcoran said he wanted to thank the district court judge and the state solicitor for recognising the lack of merit in the case and for bringing it to an end, “thus sparing the accused gardaí and their families any further unnecessary worry, stress and anxiety”.

However, he said he believed the case represents an indictment of how the commission conducts its business and questions if it observes the basic values which are emblazoned on its masthead of “inquiry, independence, impartiality”.

“The fact that the judge and state solicitor could see, after only one hour of evidence from the first witness the lack of merit in the case, raises serious questions as to why this prosecution was brought by the commission at all and why it passed muster with the office of the DPP,” Mr Corcoran said.

He said the GRA was also concerned that a prosecution could be taken against gardaí for using pepper spray, which was sanctioned for use by the State as “a non-injurious alternative to the baton”.

“Had this case succeeded it would have had huge implications for our members. It would have placed doubt in the minds of gardaí as to whether or not to deploy it.”

A commission spokesman said use of force, including the deployment of pepper spray was “subject to oversight by Garda management, the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission and where appropriate the courts”.

“This was a case where, following a Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission investigation, a prosecution was brought by the DPP.

“It is important to note, however, that there was no verdict as the prosecution was withdrawn,” the spokesman said.

Don't the GRA provide legal assistance?

It's shocking that the members were treated like this. The GOC seem pretty inept on this one . Can the members sue them for costs?

€14, 000 in legal costs, I would like to see that itemised. I don't suppose the legal world has been exposed to the ills of the recession.

Officer's life in not in danger after he suffered a blow to the head at the KCR

A member of the gardaí has been attacked in Dublin overnight.
It is understood he observed an incident at a green area in Ravensdale Park near the KCR and was attacked by an individual when he went to investigate.
The garda suffered a blow to the head and other members of the force came to his aid before he was taken to St James hospital for treatment.
His injuries aren't believed to be life threatening.
The officer is based at Sundrive Road station, and gardaí at Crumlin are investigating.
    No arrests have been made.

Hopefully something comes of the investigation.

    http://www.newstalk.ie/Two-arrested-after-armed-robbery--carjacking-in-Wexford
Two men have been arrested after an armed robbery and a carjacking in Co. Wexford.

Two masked men attempted to rob the at Permanent TSB in Gorey at around 1pm this afternoon, with what is believed to be a handgun. But they fled empty-handed after the panic alarm was activated.

Gardai pursued their black Fiat Punto - driven by a third raider - out the Arklow Road and the men then hijacked a Toyota Corolla at Kilmurry Cross.

Two of the men were caught by gardai as they tried to hijack another car. One of the men was pepper sprayed, while a firearm was recovered in a field nearby.

One garda received minor injuries in the incident.

The garda helicopter is still searching for the third man. The other two who are aged in their 20s are being held at Enniscorthy and Gorey garda stations.

It seems at this early stage that it was a well co-ordinated and quick response to the robbery, but what caught my attention on the radio was the notion of an armed person being taken down by a police man and pepper spray. It don't think it says something about criminals in this country - the murders of Jerry McCabe and Adrian Donoghue say otherwise - that they threw the handgun away it seems is interesting. It demonstrates again the perils of coming up against armed individuals with little more than a baton, a vest and, notably in this case, pepper spray.

I do hope the third individual is rounded up.

Well done to Cork Gardai this evening, I hate the way the Echo mentions they were patrolling instead of responding.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2014/0703/628301-john-paul-odriscoll-court-high-speed-chase/
A man, who drove a stolen van deliberately at a stationary garda motorcyclist following a high-speed chase through Cork city, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

John Paul O'Driscoll, who has 168 previous convictions, had pleaded guilty to 17 charges including burglary, reckless endangerment and aggravated damage.

His passenger, Damien Fitzgerald, received a four-year sentence for burglary and for allowing himself to be carried in a stolen vehicle.

Cork Circuit Criminal Court was told that the incident has had a very traumatic effect on Garda Michael Twomey, and that only time will tell if he will be able to continue his career with the Garda Traffic Corps.

Judge Seán Ó Donnabháin described the high-speed chase from one side of Cork city to the other on Good Friday this year as manic, mindless and phenomenally dangerous and "absolutely at the higher end of the scale of offences".

Two gardai killed by a teenage joyrider in Donnybrook 15 years ago have been hailed for their pride and dedication to the job.

Garda Tony Tighe and Garda Michael Padden, who were stationed at Donnybrook, died in a collision in the early hours of Sunday, April 14, 2002.

The pair were just 45 minutes into their early morning shift when a stolen car - travelling at maximum speed - crashed into their patrol car at the White's Cross Junction near Leopardstown in Stillorgan.

The two officers were trying to clear cars from the path of the stolen vehicle when it hit their stationary squad car at a speed of up to 190kmh.

Speaking on the 15th anniversary of their deaths yesterday, Superintendent Gerry Delmar, of Donnybrook Garda Station, said both men remain in the thoughts of gardai at the station.

"The thoughts and prayers of the Donnybrook district are today with the families of our late colleagues Garda Tony Tighe and Garda Mike Padden on the 15th anniversary of their tragic death in the line of their duty," said Supt Delmar.

"Both Tony and Mick are fondly remembered by their colleagues and friends, and by the entire community of Donnybrook, where they served with pride and dedication."

Gda Tighe, a married man with a family of four, was a stalwart of the force.

He had 32 years of service under his belt and, having grown up in nearby Ranelagh, was based in Donnybrook for all of his career.

    Grief

Gda Padden, from Belmullet in Co Mayo, was living in Dublin with three of his classmates from the Garda College in Templemore.

Their deaths deeply shocked the nation and led to an outpouring of grief and demands for action against joyriders.

Raymond Dowdall (30), who was aged just 16 at the time, was given an eight-year sentence and a 30-year road ban in 2003 for killing the two gardai.
