    It's very easy to bypass swear filters and write words like cunt .

    Why are people offended by a few letters in a specific arrangement?

    Most people can tell what the curse is by context and the number of asterisks that replace the letters.

    Helps maintain some decorum about the place I'm sure. If swear filters weren't a thing some threads would become pretty ugly pretty fast. If you can't swear you are encouraged to be a little more intellectual in your posts. I use that term loosely.

    Work filters, possibly. Swear words could well be blocked by company servers, and asterixes are a way around that.

    At times, I feel like it's excessively prudish and a bit old fashioned.

    But then I think about the general level of reasoning, articulacy and the emotional stability of a large proportion of the user base and I shudder to think about the quality of the contributions on parts of the site in a post-swear filter world. Somewhere like AH or CA would surely become, for want of a better description, shitshows. And they are bad enough as it is.
