I recently purchased something from an American website. The cost of the order, including shipping, was about €50. I had ordered from American sites before and remember paying for customs afterwards and it wasn’t much.

Today I got a letter from Fedex requesting me to pay €120 in fees. Is this legitimate? How can it cost so much?

Phone Fedex and ask for their calculation basis - but if there was no invoice provided with the item they may have come up with a value.

If there's no invoice or if the invoice is obviously under declared (a lot of chinese sites do this), a reference value is found online, standard shipping costs applied and then the vat / duty is calculated.

The item must have been very cheap as shipping with fedex from the USA would be about €50 even at a decent discount
