    Prof Fitzgerald blanch.

    Bit pricey though.

Not Prof Fitzgerald. I hear his assessments are not accepted by Dept of Education.

    He's a professor.

They have to be accepted. Or they'd be going against their own education system.

I've used him and can confirm they're accepted.

No, they don't. I'm in healthcare myself and I've seen them not accepted.

    Not accepted by whom?

    DOE?

Anything written anywhere on what's accepted and what's not?

Never heard of his not been accepted and also used him myself

Would seem bizzare for an education system not to accept

Yeah it is mad but I know my friend had her son reassessed by doe as they were no longer accepting the profs diagnosis. They want a multi disciplinary team to do the diagnosis.

Interesting. I won't suggest him anymore so :)

no harm suggesting - just with the caveat dept might make you go though HSE as well. Sometimes if you have a piece of paper it can speed up the process sometimes not. the system is totally messed up.

Yes I'm aware of cases where DOE haven't accepted them - I imagine they're asking themselves how a diagnosis can be made based on an interview with the parents alone without seeing the child. Other psychologists'/psychiatrists' are accepted. I'm not aware that there is a list of names on the DOE's books.

They are accepted by DOE currently in my area.Apparently it varies across the country. However, they would not be the most thorough, from what I've heard and unless your kid is very clearly looking autistic, as some kids indeed are, I would recommend going where you get a multi disciplinary assessment by at least a pyschologist and speech therapist for a more comprehensive one and who do the ADOS format. We went with the ARC centre in Malahide. No complaints and it was v thorough - 3 appts and a preschool observation included.

    What was the cost?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭73trix

We were extremely lucky to get it done via HSE as they were buying in assessments for a while cos the HSE waiting list was so bad. I don't think the HSE are still doing that though. So don't know what people are doing in our area now.

Some private health insurance covers some of the cost of these private assessments I'm told but I guess it might depend on the insurer. I've heard people quote anything from E600- E1000. It's awful.

How are you doing at mo? I’m at a loss and want to do more to help my child.
Have you try Gemiini program? What you review?
Sorry I’ve read some of you post and feel like I could be writing them

Hi. we're doing ok at the moment I guess. Little man has made a lot of progress this year, I think a lot of it is thanks to playschool. I don't know about the Gemini programme. We got the AIMS assistance in playschool for him for this year so that should help again. We are waiting on the HSE parent workshop on Autism. It's a 6 hour introduction programme about understanding ASD so will let you know if any help.

I've read some articles on Middleton autism page - https://www.middletownautism.com/ They also do free parent training around the country so keep an eye out for that.

I would worry about behavior management down the road and we may end up looking into private help here as there is zero HSE psychology support where we live!

If you can afford it, don't wait around just get in your own people as often as you can afford to.

You'll be a long time waiting on anyone else to help

    +1.

Sounds like you need to go private and get a professional's opinion.

Not all ASD kids have obvious signs of "behavioral" problems

There's not one thing but generally when a number of things combine.

Someone _like_ prof fitz will pretty much tell you whats what in a few minutes.

e.g delayed speech by itself while it's a concern is not specifically a problem.

socialising issues by itself is not a problem

it's when a number of them start hit

I wouldn't wait around any longer, go to a professional.

I am probably skeptical due to my own experience, but it sounds like they are trying to get you not to proceed with the AON. I could be totally wrong.
A lot of kids (including my own) with autism are very placid. Each child is different.

If you go private go to someone who does a DSM5 or ADOS assessment

We had our son assessed by Prof. Fitz in April and his diagnosis was accepted with no issues.

Currently 26 months waiting on EIT and speaking to them the other day, it's gonna be at least another six before he is seen.

They've sent us on some courses, Hanen etc, but that's about it.

I'm not going to not go though with the AON, they have me stressed to the breaking point! I'm just not letting him be labelled!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,609 ✭✭✭irishgirl19

No one wants their child to be labelled. It is a necessary evil for services in this country like home tuition.
The AON is not diagnostic anymore anyway.

I'm not trying to insult anyone, I just hate they the way they (Hse) treat parents who only looking the best support for the children to help them achieve their full potential

I hear ya. We have resigned ouselves to the face we will have to pay for intervention indefinitely. Thankfully DCA covers the most part.
An OT rang my husband a few weeks after SLT showed concerns. There was a 5 min conversation and she said she has enough info to do a sensory diet for us.
Sensory diet comes in the post for (boys name) and all male pronouns apart from first page which had our daughters name. It was obviously a generic one.
