Just looking at a first vs seconds is interesting.

    1st Choice|2nd Choice
    Cian Healy|Dave Kilcoyne
    Rob Herring|Ronan Kelleher
    Tadgh Furlong|Andrew Porter
    Iain Henderson|Devin Toner
    James Ryan|Ultan Dillane
    CJ Stander|Peter O'Mahony
    Josh van der Flier|Jack O'Donoghue
    Caelan Doris|Max Deegan
    |
    Conor Murray|John Cooney
    Jonathan Sexton|Ross Byrne
    Jacob Stockdale|Keith Earls
    Bundee Aki|Robbie Henshaw
    Garry Ringrose|Chris Farrell
    Andrew Conway|Dave Kearney
    Jordan Larmour|Will Addison

Our second string backline actually looks good, given the injury to Carbery especially. But our second strong pack less so. I suppose if you factor in Leavy and Conans injuries that does improve things somewhat. But other than the front row the above isnt great. We will probably need to rely on the first choice guys staying fit really.

Stick in Ruddock at 6 and it would make it look a lot better

Yeah but then you're dropping POM. Unless you transfer him across to 7 then it's probably much of a muchness in many ways, even considering the difference in form. It's a very inexperienced back row overall.

There's a new leadership group in the Ireland squad. Best is obviously gone, but so too is CJ. Ringrose, Ryan and Furlong are now in.
He has been encouraged by the early signs from his new Ireland leadership which includes experienced heads in Sexton, Munster captain Peter O’Mahony, and Ulster captain Iain Henderson, as well as the Leinster trio of James Ryan, Garry Ringrose, and Tadhg Furlong. Exiting are the retired Best and also back row CJ Stander.

    Stick POM at 7.....

Ruddock POM Conan would be a good combo with Deegan on bench

Earls is injured but don't let the facts get in the way

Don't let the premise of his post pass you by. It's a depth chart based on who's in the Ireland camp. Injuries are irrelevant.

So why aren’t leavy and Conan in there again? If only he had mentioned why.

Ah, lads. Not everything is a slight against Munster.

The 1st vs 2nd is based on the team that's been selected for Scotland.
Leavy and Conan are literally mentioned in the post! But weren't included in the table as they won't feature in the 6 Nations.

It's just a way of viewing the depth in camp. You're looking for insult where there is none.

Earls is first choice and injured, simple as that.
After the Scotland game, if the others are outstanding, he may lose his first choice status. At the moment he is still first choice.

Unless you are actually Andy Farrell, you have no way of knowing if that's the case, injury or otherwise.

It's really not simple as that. We have no idea if he's first choice or not anymore.

    Yes I do
Every time Earls is fit he is picked (i.e. First choice)
If that changes he is no longer first choice

So draw for next RWC made after November series. Not sure if this was always on the cards but deciding seedlings almost 3 years in advance of tournament seems daft! https://amp.rugbypass.com/news/world-rugby-have-just-put-added-pressure-on-teams-to-improve-their-results-in-2020/?__twitter_impression=true

It has changed as we have a new coach.

Appalling behaviour from fans of Ireland's third best province.

CJ existing the leadership group is interesting. Seems all the back slapping etc doesn't hold much weight. Surprised enough at Ringrose and Furlong joining it too.

More I think about it, more disappointing the selection is really. He had to do something with the backrow but otherwise it's really just more of the same, and wouldn't be surprised if we saw him go back to the guys with that experience as the tournament goes on. Doris is going to have to tear it up or there'll be a clamour to drop him. Hopefully we do something other than just run into them with the ball at least.

I see Ringrose becoming the next captain over Ryan, he has the ability and leadership skills to do it and along with Ryan is probably the only guaranteed starter.

Great highlight on the Rugby World Cup Facebook page today of Earls and then O’Mahoney getting turned inside out by the Japanese wing.
O’Mahoney in particular is made look particularly poor but then again we know he doesn’t like making tackles.

    Annnnnnnnnnnnnnyway.

O'Driscoll on OTB there this evening making the very plausible argument that this Ireland squad, in particular the forward pack, is lacking a toerag, a thug, a hothead, a grappler, a street-fighter, an instigator, a lunatic, an enforcer, an agent provocateur.

Do we agree? If so do we see a Bakkies, a Burger, a Cudmore, a Johnson or even an O'Connell emerging from within this group? Will we need a physical talisman, a colossus to cause aggro in London and Paris?

Earls is still Irelands best winger according to Drico, not sure how I feel about that
