17" gaming laptop budget €1500

Does anyone have any suggestions for a 17" gaming laptop with a budget in the region of €1,500 approximately? No os required or hard disks really (there are plenty of spares about that can be used for this).

I'm considering pc specialist as you can spec a machine without the os and hard disk that you don't require.

Ideally the graphics card will be nvidia 1060 or 2060 spec.

Any suggestions are welcome.

If it doesn't need to be 17" you can get 15" RTX2060 laptops for as low as 999 pounds. Like this one, great cpu, 16gb ram, 512gb nvme ssd + RTX2060. Don't get a 1060, they are completely obsolete. Bare minimum should be 1660ti for new gaming machine.

Folks I just wanted to post a quick note to thank you all for your input and suggestions.

I had seen the G7 suggested as a possibility, it may well work with the discount. This machine needs to be able to do about 4-5 years service as a gaming and developer laptop.

The 17" is nice for the screen estate but the likelihood is it would be using a dual screen setup for development purposes with a docking station so 15" could do the trick also.

Thanks again Glasso. Thats interesting, from what I had read the performance difference between 2060 and 2070 was not all that significant. To hear that the 1660ti is not significantly slower than the 2060 is a revelation to me though.

I don't think ray tracing or dlss are crucial requirements for this even if it is to to be useful for 5 years hence.

well I think that the 2060 is about 12-15% more powerful than the 1660ti in desktop configuration but in laptop (mobile) configuration seems like from that article that Nvdiia have crippled the 2060 a bit more and it's only 5% more than the 1660ti in that set-up. so not really worth the extra money.

only a small minority of games out there at the moment with ray-tracing and dlss and you'll still be able to play them without that and still look good.

What does anyone make of this machine? It comes in around €1,470. The wireless only supports up to AC which is fine for now but with wifi6 starting to appear over the coming years it might be a minor weakness. You can't have everything though.

Two other similar options are the HP Omen or a Dell G7.

That's very helpful. That coupon code is a real saving.
I'm a little wary of the Dell though as apparently it gets very hot and it's hard to know of the components are up to scratch. Dell in the past have not been a quality brand in my experience. Still times may have changed,

The MSI looks solid in build overall and what reviews I could find seemed positive. HP ice not got near at all so far.

I tried the dell coupon code and it will only drop the price to 1360 as it doesn't apply to another existing offer on the laptop which drops it to 1400. So not quite so much of a saving unfortunately.

2 years down the line you won't have a warranty anywhere unless you paid for an extended one.

they have been around a long time and owned saveonlaptops which was reliable (renamed to box now)

Yeah i'd be paying extra for an extended warranty. would pay for a 3 year warranty (as I'd hope to knock 3 years out of whatever i end up buying).

I imagine any warranty would rest with the manufacturer (Acer, Asus, HP, etc) rather than the seller so assuming they still have a European presence then you may be ok. It might have to go to Germany or somewhere further afield thoughb for repair unless they established local operations.

I don't know - I'd assume that the warranty is with the seller.

Wouldn’t be a massive gamer but as I’m hoping to have the laptop for at least 3 years I’m thinking its best to "futureproof" as much as possible by getting a pretty good spec machine

the 1660ti is probably enough and available for cheaper

there is not a lot of performance difference between that card and the 2060 when run in laptops if you can get a good saving then take it.

Thanks Glasso. Was reading the same online but i couldnt find alot at the same price point with the same spec on other sites.
I pressed the button on the order a few minutes ago so hopefully it turns out to be a good purchase.

Omen has an accessible chassis so that you can add more RAM/Storage yourself without any hassle, Omen screen is a lot better as well (144hz fhd)

I've echo'd elsewhere but the HP Omen 144hz screen in 2018 and 2019 models are hands down the best and most responsive with minimal ghosting, and colour accuracy is very good also.

As it happens we purchased an hp omen 17 at the reduced price on Amazon.

I got a look at it last night. The screen is excellent. The sound is only so so but adequate.

It is heavy but the impressive cooling on it has kept it to very reasonable temperatures without huge noise from the cooling fans. I saw it running xcom 2, I've yet to see it run something more heavyweight.

The keyboard is decent, nothing extraordinary. Trackpad and mouse buttons are very useable.

The only criticism of note is the weight of the power pack and that the power becomes very hot, you certainly wouldn't want to pick it up in your hand for long.

I'd certainly recommend it as a desktop replacement machine from what I've seen of it.
