So seems avantcard deem topping up Revolut a "cash transaction" and charge 2.50 for the pleasure. I rang up to find out what these charges on my account were and I was told that they deem certain transactions "cash transactions" and named out a few, topping up revolut cards etc, doing the lottery, any gambling transaction attracts this charge.

Is this common with other cards?

Not that I've seen or heard of elsewhere.

    Revolut I can kinda understand as it's a competitor....but lottery/ gambling??

Sounds like you need to change provider

I would think so, because that's exactly what it is.

Load up revolut/lotto.ie from credit card and transfer back to your bank account.

There are a few reasons for this, not least of which is "They get away with it", but the second almost real reason for this is transactions like this (and also gambling transactions) are highly associated with fraud, money laundering and being bloody difficult to reverse later.

That charge is (or at least the excuse for it is) insurance against the high-risk transactions you want to make.
