Tuesday sleet/snow risk - midlands, north and southwest

There is a risk of rain turning to sleet and snow tomorrow - particularly later tomorrow and particularly in a line through central Ulster, the midlands down in to the southwest.

2 - 4 cm possible in some areas especially on higher ground.

That's not to rule out other areas for some flakes as well as the system moves away winds go off shore in the east for example so we could see some flakes here in the late afternoon or evening.

There is still a little uncertainty but should be confident enough to call it this evening.

Shouldn't be too much snow overall but we have not had much to observe so far so hopefully ye get lucky :cool:

Cold and feeling raw with top temperatures for the bulk of the country of just 1 - 4c (colder through late afternoon/evening) but wind will be well down on today.

Yes. It would be good to just see some snow falling at this stage. Maybe come early February we will have a bit more to look forward to.

most of Ireland and indeed much of Europe has yet to see a single flake this winter, however only a few of the models are going with a chance of something wintry and mainly over high ground.

Icon and Arpege are showing just rain.

Hirlam is showing a bit of wintryness around north midlands and on into Northern Ireland:

GFS has a chance of wintryness on peaks of mountains across the west and north:

Yeah looks wintry all right especially over high ground. Pressure low enough so less distance for the frozen precipitation to fall.

Wettest in the Southern half of the country in general.

Looks bitter cold all right Kermit.

I love hiking in snow.

This website says only 1-2cm on Galtymore (917m asl) on Tuesday and yet says 12cm on Thursday night. What gives?

Falling snow here on December 14th, 15th and again last Thursday. South Laois 90mASL.

a few opportunities in the next 4 days for wet snow over low ground and settling over higher ground, unfortunately by Sunday we're back to mild air with us sitting on the wrong side of a buckling jet, the good news is that if the pattern continues for a week or 2 then the chance of a proper cold spell are 60/40 in our favour.

Yes, and November 11th wasn't it? Snow from M7 Kildare across border into Laois and quite heavy (4cm?) around Ballybrittas, Emo, Mountmellick.

Charts pulled back on the wintry precipitation, mostly rain it would seem reserving anything of significance settling to the highest terrain and more towards the N of the country.

You're correct! Thats 4 days of snow falling this winter so far, only nothing of significance (apart from that Nov event) covering the ground.

This day in 2014 there was snow in Clare, hopefully we'll get a few wispy showers throughout the day.

Its nice to watch, fluttering away in the breeze.

Heavy snow this morning at 6 am, none of it stuck, but nice to see given that was the first snow i've seen all winter.

Slightest dusting along the upper most ridges of the Ox Mountains today. Top of Nephin is good and white however.
Wouldn't be surprised if there was a fair amount of frozen hail up there though.The tail end of Brendan swept in a good few heavy hail showers in these parts.
