Cross Of Iron - Particularly the scary bit with the tank coming through the wall and "demarcation"

Europa Europa - Madcap German film about a jewish kid who finds himself first in the Komsomol then in the Hitler Youth.

Saving Private Ryan - For the beach and final battle scenes.

Battle Of Britain - Why did the nazis have to be so bloody smug?

Ice Cold In Alex - A story about an ambulance driving alcoholic battling the afrika corps and sobriety in a desert. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

    Also rans:

Hey! Let's Kill Der Fuhrer! - Controversial unreleased 1967 Cliff Richard musical based on the series of July 1944 bomb plots. Hank Marvin plays one-armed one-eyed conspirator Claus Von Stauffenberg. Melvyn Hayes plays Hitler.

Dad's Army - "Vot ist your name?" - "Don't tell him Pike!"

    Allo Allo! - Obviously.

How about an 'onourable mention for " 'Allo 'Allo " ?

    Classic BBC Comedy, that is...

    Agree with Von,
Cross of Iron is a great WWII movie. I'm suprised it's not on more peoples lists! It's set on the russian front and charts the eventual german collapse and encirclement. Ahead of it's time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Bollix I forgot Cross of Iron replacing Bridge on the River Kwai with that :)

    Gandalf.

Das Boot - great movie, one of the few I've seen where all the main characters die.

The problem with this topic, is that world war 2 has conflicting stories, different perspectives.

Hollywood as John Travolta put it in "Sword fish" produce a large mount of sh*t!

To Europeans World War 2 began when Hitler invaded Poland, to Chinese it was when the imperial Japanese army invaded Manchuria, to Africans it was when Italy conquered North Africa, and to Americans it was the bombing of Peral Harbour.

America done the honurable thing by fighting the Nazi army along with the help of British, Russians, Australians...

But each country likes to believe that they won the war, Russians historians will tell you it was because of their sacrifice, Americans will talk about their power and might, English film makers will talk about their brave men and the battle of Britian.

    But these tales are one-sided.

America sold weapoms and machines to both sides during WW2 like Italy and Germany, they also sold IBM Holerith machines to Nazi's so they could track down Jews ( see Edwin Black.com or buy "IBM and the holocaust" in Easons). Hollywood of course will never mention this "Holerith Machine".

I'm not sure but here is what the death toll for WW2 is like.

1 Russia ( with the deaths of some 10 million FAMILY)
    2 China almost uncountable.
3 Germany ( not only were 6 million jews killed by Hitler but some seven million German homosexuals, disabled, anti-Nazi..)

Schindler's List: A classic and a master peice, a must watch for any WW2 movie fan.

The Blazing Sun: Korea, Under the Japanese Occupation period, Choon-Ho goes to every length to fulfill his lustful desire and get ahead in society.

    Das Boot (Director's Cut): A remarkable film.[German & one over-dubbed in English)

Enemy At The Gates: I enjoyed the story of Zaitsiev, the noble sniper (check the book Stalingrad by Anthony Beevor), being made in to a movie.

Hiroshima And Nagasaki: The Harvest Of Nuclear War: A frightful tale of the most destructive momment in mankinds history.

but some of these tales are "one-sided"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 175 ✭✭scipio_major

So, like that matters to the story in the long run. You're allowed to play with the facts if it makes a good story (one sided though it may be, no-one cares that Star Wars is onesided). You shouldn't be allowed to make U-571 (my vote for worst, most error ridden, unexciting WWII film ever)

I won't give my own top five because everyone has already been meantioned.

Some good post here, and some good films, I'm not sure who has the best choice for WW2 films but it may be a battle between

    1Green Hell
    2Gandalf
    3Enygma
    4Irish guykokojin
    5 Inspector Gadjet
    6Lemming

Anyone who voted "Shaving Ryan's Private Parts" is a twit. Tom Hanks pppfffffft , that forest gump couldn't Shave privates to save his own life.

But Darth Maul would have done the job.

    Use the FORCE!

    Favourites in no particular order:

    Bridge on the river Kwai
    The Great Escape
    Kelly's Heroes
    Das Boot
    Guns of Navarone

(as well as the Fighting Sullivans (haven't seen it in about 15 years), Where Eagles Dare (the other watchable Alistair McLean book-turned-movie), and the greats: Mrs Miniver and Casablanca (eliminated as the war is more of a backdrop))
