Registering with a New GP?

Hey there - I've moved to Dublin recently from the North-west for work, and while I do like the GP I had growing up back there, it isn't really practical to have to travel back on a 6-hour round trip every time I need certified sick leave or whatever.

So, if I get sick one day, can one just rock up to the closest GP office and wait to see them, or do I need to register with them beforehand? If so, what does that actually involve? I'm not on a Medical Card or (at least at the moment) Health Insurance, btw.

Well once the practice is taking on new patients. I'm in Meath and unless Dublin always has an abundance mentality, when I moved up this way only one of the practices was taking on new patients.

Don't wait until you're sick, will just bring more stress than it's worth. Try and get some recommendations for your area then phone them and see can you register with them. It will depend how busy they are eg surgery I've attended since I was a child doesn't take new patients unless they're related to or married to an existing patient even for private patients as there's only 2 GPs who sit there
