Well in 2000 the west wasn't a dystopian ****hole so probably not. It was all going swimingly until the mid 2000s when the internet turned into a handful of monopolies with unprecendented global reach and zero regulation.

What makes you think that you live in a dystopia?

I think the problem is that more people have the perception that the world is worse while in fact we have continued objective progress.

According to some, the regulation of Big Tech is oddly a far-right proposition. Looks like the Biden administration may have been infiltrated by these far-right activists: Biden Is Assembling a Big Tech Antitrust All-Star Team

It is curious that during the election campaign, Joe Biden did not make antitrust enforcement against Big Tech a part of his pitch in the primaries like other candidates did, and it probably made sense to not bite the hands that feeds you while seeking out the Presidency. But now it seems, as President, Biden is recruiting Big Tech critics into top level government positions in order to finally tackle the anti-trust and monopoly issues that are flouted by a very small number of massive Tech companies.

Indiana’s attorney general has launched an investigation into the five Big Tech companies to find out if Facebook, Twitter, Google, Amazon and Apple violated Indiana consumer laws. The AG said that "In a free society, few assets are more important to consumers than access to information and the opportunity to express political viewpoints in meaningful forums". He believes that the Big Tech companies may be using deceptive or unfair business practices by censoring conservative points of view.

This investigation could lead to lawsuits against these Big Tech companies. Don't forget that while these companies limit/censor conservative views now, they could easily turn round and suppress liberal views in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if more US States didn't follow suit (excuse the pun).
