When did a dog lead become a leash?

Everybody now talks about their dog leash, but why (and when) did the humble dog lead become a leash? In our local park you can still see some "please keep your dog on a lead" signs, but these are slowly being replaced by dog on a leash signage

    Americanisation or what?

I’d be more concerned about the dog walkers who are not cleaning up after their dogs.

    Bin the poo!

Hang on there while I pretend to care.

Or the people that think it’s ok to have their dog bombing around off lead. One of my dogs HATES other dogs he doesn’t know.

If your dog came running at mine, & mine bit yours out of fear. It’s my dog that gets pts. Who’s fault is that.

    Get that into your head!

Leash is a very old word, goes back to the 15th century or so. You can often find older words in American English in the same way that Quebecois is more like 18th century French. We just prefer lead in this part of the world so let it go OP.

If your dog is that likely to bite it should be muzzled when out and about.

All dogs should still be on a lead when they are out no exceptions.

Yes, take the easy bio-degradable poo, put it in a non bio-degradable plastic bag and into a bin from which it will be dumped into a landfill site and lie there for hundreds of years.

Better than leaving it on the footpath like so many currently do.

There’s lots of places where dogs are allowed off leash. It’s how they get exercise and socialise.

There, you said leash - why?

Because I don’t get overly hung up on the origins of my word choices.

Your dog is afraid of other dogs, so everyone else has to keep their dogs on a leash just to keep you and your dog happy?, get lost. You should have socialized your dog properly and you wouldn't be having a problem dog.

    Just curious.

After using the word 'lead' for fifty years of my life, and now leash has taken over as the word... everywhere you go now in Ireland it's the dog leash instead of dog lead

I also get hung up when people say movie theatre instead of cinema, or chips when referring to crisps!

Its a bit hard to do that when you've old farm dogs. Outside everywhere is there's. I only bring them where others should be on leads, because they can't go further than the reach of my arm and the lead.

Its a bit foolhardy to think "I know my own dog" so feel they can run around off the lead. That's how they tend to get hit by cars, or picked up and stolen by others. Not to mention, you don't know the other dogs about, and how yours will respond or interact with it.

You keep your animal on a leash because it's the law.

My dog is a great dog, I let her off the lead when there’s no one around. If I see people, or another dog, I put her back on the lead.

I could probably leave her off because she got decent “recall” and is, generally, friendly to others but, at the end of the day she’s a dog and I’m in charge of her.

I, also, pick up her shít when she goes. Seeing the amount of dog fouling on both the grass and footpath is always disheartening. It’s really not that hard to pick up and it’s not too much hassle to carry the bag to a bin, or to your home bin if there are no council ones.

The thing that really gets me is people tying their “poop bags” to trees. If you ever try to engage with them they give some lame excuse about how they’ll be ‘coming back for it’, which they never do.

    The tide is turning…

I tried keeping mine on a lease but he has yet to pay.

What does it matter what breed they are if they are well trained and socialized?I have 2 rotties who are well trained and big babies. But they won't tolerate another dog trying to be dominant. My dogs are always on leads and muzzled by law.But you always get muppets with borders, boxers, off lead and running for a confrontation.

The law states dog owners have full control of thier dogs on or off lead.Since mine is on the restricted list I conform to that. But others do not and I shouldn't be at fault if their dog gets a scratch while running up to mine.

If you own a dog and take it to public areas,be in control of it.

My dog has been socialised since he was a pup - doggy day care. He lives in a house with 3 cats & another dog & he adores all of them. He goes to work with his mum everyday to a rescue where his job is to check the temperament of the other dogs. But he needs to meet the dogs in a certain way. Like all dogs should meet. Not dragged by their owner face to face and certainly not sprinting at one that’s on lead.
