Familiarise yourself with how Boards.ie works

The Music Production forum is part of a much larger community that has its own site-wide rules and codes of conduct. Learn and respect them by reading the Boards.ie 101 right here.

    Posting in the correct area.

Please be aware that musical feedback posts need to be put in the 'Let's hear your music' thread and commercially orientated posts in the 'Commercial Interaction' thread - please think before posting, and if in doubt - ask a moderator - (their names can be found at the bottom of each individual forum pages.)

    Contribute in a constructive way.

Nobody is interested in your laser sharp ability to cut someone down. Consistently contributing nothing but noise/negativity is not helpful. One word answers aren’t useful. If you dislike a thread, use the ratings system. If you like what a poster had to say, use the thanks system.

Comment on the post not the poster.

Responding to someone's point with personal attacks, regardless of how "witty" you think they are, is not big or clever. It just comes across, at best, as being an ass and at worst a bully.

It’s much better to stay on the topic of their post, not on the person who posted it. People will respect you for that, take your opinion more seriously and you put the ball back in their court to answer your points.

Abuse is tantamount to saying "you have beaten me with your argument; I can only resort to name calling".

If someone abuses you, don’t respond in kind. Report the post and a moderator will swing by to review it. Abusing them back simply drops you to their level and will get you both infracted and/or banned.

    Respect/manners go a long way.

Around these parts, people recognise good contribution. Being respectful, mannerly and even occasionally acknowledging that someone has made you consider something in a different light, is going to win friends and influence people a lot more than being yet another rude "anonymous" internet keyboard warrior. No one wants to be around that guy.

    Answer what's asked.

If someone is posting asking about something specific, like a recommendation for a set of monitors in the €300 price range, don't wade in saying that they should wait until they can afford €2k a pair speakers. If you've a recommendation just outside their quoted price-range, great. But if you want to expound the virtues and benefits of using a far more expensive option, start a new thread about that subject!

    Room for everyone.

All styles and experience levels are welcome within the forum and not everyone is out to achieve the standard that you aim for. Some aim higher, some aim lower. Patronising or being condescending to someone whose aims don't match yours is not acceptable, and doing so consistently will get you infracted/banned. The same goes for how you treat producers who work in different genres. It's all music. Different does not equal bad, easy or worthy of contempt.

    No advertising.

No advertising or commercial posting. The MP Commercial Interaction Sub-Forum has been set up specifically for this purpose. Advertising/commercial posting will be removed, and the poster banned. This applies to any thread with a commercial or promotional gain as its purpose.

    Make your posts readable.

Make your posts readable. People will take them, and you, more seriously. Text speak and large blocks of unpunctuated text are difficult to read and will just get glossed over. No, we're not in school, you don't have to have your spelling and punctuation perfect, but if you're not going to make an effort to make your posts readable, they're just noise (see "Contributing in a constructive way" above).

Use a descriptive subject line, and a synopsis if posting a link

Subjects that capture the point of your post are far more helpful than generic subject lines like 'What do you think of this?' If your post is based on a link please provide some further info e.g. cut and paste the start of an article you are linking to and include it in the post. This keeps the topic on site as much as possible and prevents dead links completely removing the point of a thread when it moves into the archives (which are still on Google searches).

No email addresses/phone numbers in posts.

Keep your dialogue on the boards so as to encourage others to do the same. If you want to collaborate and need to exchange contact details, do so by PM.

No discussions on the personal use of cracks or illegal activity.

Doing so will get you banned.

Respect the work that moderators do.

Mods volunteer their time to help make the forums run better. Sometimes they have to make unpopular decisions. Do not use Music Production threads to attack mods decisions, if you believe a mod has made an error use the Help Desk forum.
