Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Metal lathe - advice

    Hi guys,

    I am in the market for a steel/metal lathe. I kind of have my mind settled on a Colchester Lathe, however, I'm not sure if I should go for a Chipmaster or a Student MK1.5..

    Have any of you experience with any of these machines? What would you advise? It'll be used for a combination of hobby engineering and light industrial use.

    Do you have 3 phase power supply as I suspect some of the Colchester lathes will not run off V.F.D due to the motor sets up?. Unless you plan to use a static converter/inverter that just plugs straight into the lathe original 3 phase plug or get a single phase lathe. The static inverter will have to match or exceed the power requirement of the lathe when being used. I have a Harrison M300 model and Bridgeport clone milling machine both being power off a V.F.D with no issues. The lathe topped speed of 2500 can,t be reached and the torque is not as good as a fully blown 3 phase industrial machine. Brilliant for removing chatter marks issues when turning do.
    lots of lathes for sale with excess backlash on lead screws and worn beds, spindles, etc on various web sales sites, be advised.

    Hi Can you give details of what inverter etc you have to drive lathe and Milling machine.
