Arcade and Retro – 3D Prints

I mentioned a little while back about the two new 3D printers I was going to be getting this summer and that from time to time I could probably print off something for you guys here if you couldn’t get a part, or just wanted something different that you just can’t buy elsewhere(old retro parts, parts for arcade machines, retro mods etc.).
Well the first printer is ordered and the turnaround is 4-6 weeks on it(I’m hoping to have it by the end of July or very early Aug).

So what I’d like to offer to the A&R forum(and give you time to sort out what you want) is if anyone needs something printed they can PM the details and I’ll pick a selection and print them off for free while I’m burning in the printer(I need to run a load of test prints anyway, so someone might as well get something out of it :)). I won’t be offering any chemical finish to smooth out the final print, but if that’s something you want then you can Google how it’s done(acetone vapour bath).

If you have something you want printed, it must be arcade or retro related in some shape or form(this is A&R after all). You must have the 3D printable file ready to go(watertight etc.) and in STL file format(I can also take an OBJ, but prefer stl).

For this printer the materials I offer will be ABS and PLA plastic in various colours. I’d always recommend ABS as it’s a lot stronger and less brittle than PLA, but you can decide on the material.

For those that want to check out the printer and what it can do, it’s a Ultimaker 2 Extended(basically the same as the Ulti 2, but can print bigger stuff).
The second printer(a higher quality stereolithography printer) won’t be here until sept/oct, I’ll offer the same service then for people who want to try it out(but will only print a couple of things as it’s pricey to print on that one).

    A word on the prints:
Don’t expect the objects printed to look like something you can buy in a shop, these are not injection moulded parts and you will be able to see some imperfections because of the way they are printed layer by layer(don’t be expecting to print off a bunch of rare Amiibos to sell :))

I’ve a handful of retro related 3d files on my website if you need some inspiration:
    http://www.retrovia.ie/forumdisplay.php/34-3D-Models

    tl;dr:
If you need something retro 3D printed, sort out the 3d printable file, send me a PM with a link and I’ll print it out(probably won’t print every single request).

Mods, if this isn’t allowed please let me know.

    Damn,
I'm in need of a battery cover for my Gameboy Light and the casing for the Turbo Everdrive!

Well, find yourself the 3D files and you'll be all set :)

Sure, they are all 3D files. But what I’m offering is to print out parts you want or need, not just random retro 3D stuff :)
So, the everdrive case is something that I could do for you, although the quality wouldn’t be as nice as recycling some old game case. Maybe if you gave it a quick acetone vapour bath to smooth it out it would look nice. But then you are risking losing the fine details and edge(which is important for the two halves of the case to click together).

What I’ll do is make a list of the requests I get via PM or here on the thread that I can print, and based on a few factors pick out a decent selection of them to do. That is of course if people have parts they want, and the 3D files to go along with them.
Like Ciderdude could do with a battery cover for his Game Boy light, and I’d love to sort that out for him as it’s a perfect example of what I want to offer, but I don’t think there are any printable files around for that, which is a pity.

Also, it’s worth remembering that just because the part is on thingiverse or grabcad(especially grabcad) doesn’t mean it’s a good part to print(loads of people uploading untested rubbish files to those sites). Check out the comments and see what people are saying who tried it out the parts.

On the link to my site above I have some free 3D viewing/editing software linked. So you could grab those to have look at the files(you are mainly checking for water tightness and sizing).

I got a shipping update on the printer, you guys have 3-4 weeks to sort out anything you want done.

Ah yes, no problem at all. I’ve printed off a few of those for mates in the past.
I’ve only got some orange coloured water soluble plastic left at home for now, is that ok? Just don’t get it wet and you’re grand ;)

Is it just the one you want?

bit of a thread necro I know ,and the printers probably long burnt in .. but I'm trying to get a replacement piece for a transformer done . (as in robots in disguise , not that thing that means I can plug in a famicom without it exploding).Basically the orange fin bit on top of the cab (as the robot looks a bit rubbish without it!

Actually there was a delay on the printer arriving by a few weeks. So its not here yet, but should be in the next 2 weeks I hope.

That looks like a simple part to do.
I'll stick you on the list dude :)

I'd be interested in getting a battery cover for the Zelda Game and Watch.

Ive found 2 that are closest to matching it:

Yeah, they look handy enough to do.
I'll add you to the list.

What I might do when I'm actually getting everything printed up is do a list and post it here with what everyone has requested and stick a price next to them.
That way you's can all see I'm not ripping anyone off and it is all done at cost.

The 3D printer has hit Ireland. I'm guessing delivery on Monday :0)

To compliment the 3d printing, I backed a fully funded laser engraver/cutter on kickstarter(Nov 2015 delivery). It's an open source kit, so plenty of room for hacks and improvements along the way.
I reckon i could have a bit of fun engraving and cutting all sorts of stuff(you just know I'll be sticking a few consoles under that laser :D)

Always thought that it was cool if you had got broadband from Sky and when people asked you what your provider was.....

    "Oh I have Skynet...."

For those that requested some prints I’ll be doing them over the next week. You need to tell me what material/colour you want your print in. Also, tell me how solid you want it(if it needs to be partially hollow to allow less weight or filled internally to allow more weight and strength).

I will post the total cost of the print here once I get replies(not inc the postage costs if not collecting in person or meeting in city).
If anyone else needs parts let me know in the next few days.

I have a few requests via PM, so if those people who sent me a message want to PM or post here with what material/colour they want that would be great(just state the material/Colour if you don’t want to post what you are getting printed)

My available materials are all very high grade and not rubbish el cheapo filament from Chinaland. It might be worth doing a Google search on the different materials, but if you’re unsure go for ABS. Check out the ColorFabb site as they go into detail and show samples of lots of their materials.

In PLA plastic I have Colorfabb branded “Standard White”, “Shining Silver”, “Ultra Marine Blue” “Glowfill”, “Transparent Green”, “Woodfill”, “Bamboofill” and “XT-Black”. The XT-Black is sold not as PLA but XT-Copolyester and has slightly different properties than standard PLA plastic and the Woodfill and Bamboofill have real wood particles mixed in with PLA to give a wood type effect to the final print. Glowfill, it glows :)

In Ultimaker branded ABS plastic I have “ABS Black” and “ABS Red”. I’m waiting on a delivery of white ABS, but that might take weeks so count that out for now.

    Thanks

    .

Mine is the battery cover for the Zelda Game and Watch.

I guess PLA Transparent Green is the one closest to it. As for how solid, I don't think a cover needs to be mega solid or anything right? perhaps you'd know this better than me, knowing the materials etc.

As that’s a fairly small part I can do a few prints with different settings and materials and you can decide what is best yourself. A small part like that might benefit from a 30-50 percent fill.

Cura(the software I use to print on this new bad boy) says it will cost about 20 cent to do 5 of those prints for you at ultra-quality? So it won’t break the bank :)

And remember, these prints will take a coat of paint very well, so you can always grab a can of acrylic spray to get the colour to match up to the rest of the game and watch.

Ah yes I was wondering how they would take to any re-colouring after, good to know!

Yes I should be able to about afford that alright :pac:

Came across other ones, the Mini SNES seems a big job so I don't expect that to be doable or anything, just a general interest thing.

I printed off that Pi NES case on my old printer. Wasn't happy with the result. But that was a Makerbot replicator 2 printer, piece of **** yolk as it turned out so I think the new one should be fine.

That PI NES is just the cutest!

My request was the Freetrack clip which can be used to track head movement in some retro PC games as well as modern ones:

How does ABS black plastic sound?

Thanks again for doing this, its exciting!

Well, it’s a 3D model so can be scaled to whatever size is needed without any loss of detail and printed. That one looks like it would be a bit of work as it needs multiple parts printed and probably finished to a high standard and then assembled to get it looking well.

1 more material that arrived today I can work with, Bronzefill.
The pic below(not mine) shows a print just out of the printer and one that's been polished.
It's quite heavy which was a surprise. It's made from 80% bronze and 20% PLA plastic.

Not sure what to do about the colour? its usually either yellow or orange , but since they're not on the table either the shining silver or white and paint it myself.
