That's a crazy quote, also in relation to Principal, their policies are underwritten by AXA. I left Principal earlier this year as they quoted nearly €200 more than AXA themselves did directly. Also of note, if you have car insurance with AXA they will give you a 'six wheel' discount if you take out bike insurance with them. Might be wise to a rider assessment to try and get the prices down.

Bugger, I only swapped from Axa to Allianz this year.
I done rider training with Arron about 10 years ago but i'm sure they may say its outdated now.

That is a killer of a quote kceire. Im in the opposite position to you at the moment, havent had car insurance since 2014 and been on the bike 100% since then. Now trying to get a car for the winter and they're coming back with quotes of €1,500+. My 2014 policy cost €450 and that was with only 2yrs NCB. Now they want triple that amount, its an absolute joke.

Feck, 2 options I can think of:

Try a lower rated bike - nah.

Use price quoted as a lever on the others, maybe be a bit creative with the price though they'll know if you're miles off.

My car is an electric i3 and my fully comp full benefits insurance is only €299 on that so I suppose I have to take the good with the bad.

My problem is that if I’m gona get back on a bike I want the KTM. I even looked at other bikes to see if they tickle my fancy but I keep going back to the 699 SMR in cork that’s currently on donedeal.

*anyone around charleville fancy looking at it before I spin down from the capital :p

Principal will only cover 3Party f&t in your driveway provided the bike value is below 5000€. Anything over this you have to have comprehensive, but on a 8000€ value bike they are only covering a max of 5000€ if it's driveway parking. Doesn't sound right. A garage would be fine for complete cover. (Also Extra 40€ for pillion)

Apologies, just seen this now. I'm not sure how long the rider training stays valid for, might be like the NCB and have a 2 year shelf life.

I have a garage at the side. It’s only 1m wide (basically I covered my side entrance) but using bricks and proper roof and secure door to front so I was hoping that. Y parking it in a garage (it’s classed as a garage for planning exemption) would have helped me.

In fairness that €299 for your EV is a bit of a bargain. Nonetheless it just frustrates me having 10+ years no claims and no crashes on a bike and the car insurance companies wont take that into account at all. If anything riding a bike needs a fair bit more skill and road craft than driving a car but they just treat you like you're an 18yr old novice behind the wheel and they price it accordingly. Everything in the insurance market seems to go in their favour and the consumer has no choice but to bend over and take it

Anyway best of luck if you buy the KTM and take it easy for at least the first few weeks, there is unbelievable power in those yolks and you're gonna be like a kid on Christmas morning riding that back form Cork :D

    Not going for it.
The seller is giving off really bad vibes.
Said it got a full engine rebuild. So I asked him why, was it general maintenance or did it develop an issue and then he replied sorry Nike is sold!

I got my mate to call him and he said yes it’s still available.
I’ve had a ktm before on and off as my cousin has one currently but I agree it will be hooligans bike compared to my old Bandit :)

Looking at a Husaberg in Wexford now if anyone has any opinions on them?

Had an X-Max 250 insured for just over €300 with Principal, but that died a couple of weeks so looking at replacing it with a new CB500X.

Been riding bikes most of my life, had full licence for 15+ years. Only started riding again a few years back, have 3 years NCB. Was quoted €250 odd to cover the extra expense of the new bike for the remaining 6 months, but was told that would go down to €200 if I dropped the value of the bike below €7500 (which it is really anyway), or €160 if I installed a ground anchor at home. A combination of the two didn't make a difference.

Not being from Ireland, I find the insurance here really hard to take. I couldn't even test ride a bike from a shop the other day because he said he can't afford the insurance for me to be taking it out of the carpark.

I see no rhyme or reason with principal, they say if the bike is valued over 5000€ , they won't cover it unless it's garaged.

Probably rubbish as there are a handful that do it but the UK is way better for test rides, they just throw you the keys and wave you off.

They lied, I got insured on a 7k+ with them but it had to escalated to the manager. Not garaged but then I live "somewhere after naas" as I heard a randomer in the town say recently.

Any ideas of how much it cost to insure a 2011 Yamaha xj6 diversion as a first bike on a learner permit. I'm 35 and it would be garaged

That doesn't sound too bad. Just saw it this. Reckon I'll ring round in the morning for quotes before I go ahead with the deal

    AXA Direct
    Principal (AXA are the underwriter)
    Carole Nash
    Liberty

Give each one of those a shout, just remember 1 thing, of all of them only Liberty refuse to do Multi Bike.

Also look into what you'd get off for doing a rider assessment.

    Life ain't always empty.

AXA & Liberty are the ones who run the assessments through RSA recognised instructors, Principal will accept the AXA assessment, unsure about CN.

    Hi,

hope it's not the wrong place to post this.
Is anyone one aware of any "European Cover" for motorcycle?

I don't mean a temporary travel insurance, but something that lasts for the whole year, in any (or a selection of) European countries.
Let's say, I spend 3/4 months in Ireland, 3/4 in Italy, 3/4 in Germany.
Do you know if any company (Irish or not) would cover a bike? (Bike is Irish)

    Thanks,
    cheers

You'll have to find a specialist broker, as insurance here only covers you for 30 days cover outside the jurisdiction afaik.

Ok, just to follow up on my previous quotes.
The Kim 690 am in cork was a non runner, the owner was shady and wouldn’t answer basic questions.

I looked at a 2008 950SM. Lovely bike. It’s obviously the older carb model but my insurance was like 850 if I do the driver assessment with arran rider training. Which 8 wouldn’t mind doing as I have driven bikes on the roads in a few years. It’s only 635 TPFT which I was quite shocked at how low it was.

So basically, the rider training course is a definite if I pull the trigger.

Then today I looked at a 2007 SuperDuke 990. Fab machine. So need to decide!

As a matter of curiosity, which part of Cork was it? City? If so North or Southside? reason i ask is some area's in both are ok, some are rough as well.

Might mean he was telling the truth the last time he said it was sold.
I had a rough figure agreed over the phone with him. Rang him 2 days later to confirm I was coming down the weekend and he replied ‘what ktm’?
    Mad fecker!

So I was curious. Rang him the next day on my work phone. He said it was still there. He told me he just put €1000 into the bike, new tyres etc when he mentioned a few days before that, it would need a rear tyre in a few months.

Never mentioned a rebuild in the first conversation. Then in the second he did. Asked him was it general maintenance and upkeep or was the rebuild because of an issue, his reply was bike sold.

    €600ish,

I was same boat as you, same bike, only I'm about 4 years younger!

The liberty insurance calculator used to be fairly good at throwing out quotes, seems broken anytime I go near it this year.
