Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Timber frame house

    Hi,

    We are thinking of redesigning our house, we think it is big enough but the layout/design of it is poor, so the question is, is it possible to knock the internal ground floor stud walls? It is a timber frame semi d, i know a somewhat vague question but any opinions appreciated. Would this kind of information be in the deed plans? thanks

    Yes possible with strict engineering input, supervision and sign off.

    We can’t offer structural advice here, but in short everything is possible. Suggest you try to get a designer in to Mark up the design you want, and then with structural engineer do some test holes in the walls to figure out where the structural walls are.

    Yes you can redesign to a degree but do not allow a random builder in - some would be stupid enough even in a timber frame house to see timber stud and assume its non load bearing.
    Original drawings from timber frame company would be a good start but may not be available.

    Thanks, just looking for an opinion, of course we would get the necessary tradesmen, engineers etc, just sussing it out for now. Thank you for the replies
