At a guess I'd say it's to avoid as many houses as possible, also it's quite hilly terrain around there, so that'd be a factor too.

Over that distance it won't be as twisty as it looks on the plans anyway.

Oh it should smooth out, but I just looked at that section on streetview, have to imagine they are just keeping it as offline as possible to minimise disruption, because along that straight theres one abandoned farmhouse by the road, it only starts getting houses along the roadside as you get to the curve where you'd want to take it offline anyway to keep it straighter.

For sure it's 2+2 ,you wouldn't have slip lanes for the junction halfway along if it wasn't.

It's very twisty and turny though.

No slip road there from what I can see, looks like LILO at best

Traffic on this route is 12k AADT. It'll definitely be 2+2, it's 2+2 as per feasibility study too.

Ballybofey is getting 2+2 at 7k south of Ballybofey and 9k north of Ballybofey.

LILOs are a type of slip road, though low quality.

2+2s have either at grade roundabouts or "compact grade seperated" junctions (e.g. LILO pairs). This scheme is going for the latter + roundabouts at the N13 and A5 junctions.

Constant talk from Donegal about the lack of investment in both roads and infrastructure in the county. Then the Government comes along with a plan to plough €500m into new roads in Donegal, completing the most needed projects and relieving two massive bottlenecks, and the focus is on a small number of properties that will need to be CPOd for the road. Which should surprise no one given the unfettered sprawl that is observed in the county
Letterkenny Cllr Donal Coyle campaigned on the Ten-T issue in last year’s local elections. he says there is no doubt that houses will be lost, and he says there will be other ramifications, particularly for farmers……

Is there a NI project that will link up outside Lifford, from the map it looks like the road is ending in a field

Indeed there is, the cross border A5/N14 Link. Already has planning permission but not yet built, it’ll be the terminus of this scheme.

And the main A5 scheme Strabane to Newbuildings (Derry essentially) will link in with the cross border link and should get shovels in the ground this year with a bit of luck

Will that bypass Strabane or will all that traffic go through the roundabout beside Asda?

So the planned A5 I believe will turn that roundabout into an overbridge, a new roundabout about 500m south of it will have the N14 exit, not sure where Strabane access will be, either to the south, further north or both.

EDIT: Wesley Has the Junction layout for it here

Newbuildings to Strabane is only Phase 1A; it will finish north of Strabane, and the bit bypassing Strabane itself
..Phase 2, which is Omagh South to Strabane North, will tie in the the new cross-border link.

Won't be for some time yet..

Apologies! I forgot that it was only to north of strabane :o

I reckon the Omagh South to Strabane North will be the last bit to be done. Its the most expensive.

Phase 3; Ballygawley to the border, bypassing Auchnacloy is supposed to be the final section, but you may be right; depends how quickly those folks at Stormont get moving, and how soon the N2 from Ardee to the border is done.

If the N14 progresses soon then there would probably be more pressure to get the link road done for the north than Aughnacloy, at least at Aughnacloy the N2 will actually still meet the A5 directly and not just end in a field by a river!

To be fair, it will end just before Aughnacloy itself, forcing 2+2 traffic through the village at an even greater rate than at present.

I wish they'd just build the lot in one go.

(See also mutiple other road schemes across the island, past and present...)

This highlights fairly well one of the big things I'd like to see when these sort of projects happen, the old N14 will now be ideally suited to becoming a narrowed road with fantastic cycling and walking provision to provide a safe route between towns. I'd like to see remediation of the old road tied directly to the main project, part of the finishing works. Given the high cost of building the new roads upgrading the old ones is a drop in the ocean.

We have far too many superceded roads in this country that are far beyond their new spec for cars with no care given to peds and cyclists.

It would be a fantastic road for cycling/walking if they keep it maintained. Here’s hoping!!

Is there a confirmed start/finish date for this road? In what order will the sections be done?
