Hello everyone, would like to help my neighbor, an old man with Parkinson's disease. Been paying over five grands a year on insurance even though never used emergency services. The quotes online do not show advanced settings for specific ages and people with certain disabilities. What companies and plans do you know of that I can check, that are known for their competitive prices? Thanks a mil.

Most if not all health insurers will not cover pre existing conditions for 5 years of you are moving to a lower level of cover or have not been insured before.

Sorry not useful at all, no advanced settings. No age selection, pre-existing conditions, etc.

@derekeire, true forgot about that... They can still quote high, but perhaps provide a better price while asking for the records to be transferred... Anything cheaper or as competitive as Laya?

If he has been paying health insurance his age won't matter. It depends if his disease was a pre existing condition. €5k seems a lot.

Age is totally irrelvant, they don't discriminate based on age (young people basically subsidise old people in our system).

If he has health insurance plan already, then pre-existing condition may not be an issue. For example, if he has cover in private hospital for private room in the current plan there will be no issue, but if he only has semi private room cover on private hospital and switches to a plan that offers private room cover, he will likely have to wait 5 years.

The HIA website is the best thing going for impartial advice and best used to compare prices across many different plans.

Basically the plans vary broadly as follows

    1. Type of room cover which is 3 stages, private in public hospital, semi private room in private hospital, or private room in private hospital

    2. The private hospitals which are included, mid range will include beacon, top of the line will include blackrock clinic, mater private etc. This varies widely across plans.

    3. Cover of day to day medical expenses like gp visits, consultant charges, most mid range plans don't cover this or have a high excess which means you're unlikely to actually be due anything.

    4. Some cheaper plans have an excess which bends down the yearly price.

One way to use the HIA website is to put in your current plan and then just find the cheapest plan which includes all the same benefits. You will probably be able to save 25-40% doing this if he has never shopped around before.

My advice to you though is to arm him with information and let him make his own decision. If you change his plan and he gets told he is not covered for something, even if he was never covered for it previously, you will be getting the blame!
