thanks, so the old railway yard for the former cement works I take it? That should be built now, not planned IMHO.

it would make sense to link the end of the luas finglas line with a shuttle bus to the airport... even if the bus went every 20/30 mins... with a huge park and ride at the end of the line, you could also provide airport parking and make a lot of money!

that could actually take pressure off the road network around the airport! Do any buses go from liffey valley to the airport? if people could let people off there and avoid the m50 toll twice, I wonder would it get much use?

The Maynooth Airport Hopper serves Leixlip, Lucan, and Liffey Valley (on the N4).

Who would use it? In theory journeys south of Glasnevin would interchange at Glasnevin as would some journeys from as far north as Finglas. North of Finglas you'd bus you Ballymun road and change to ML

    BusConnects would serve this journey.

P&Rs for commuters shouldn't be used for airport parking, if commuters can't park it defeats the purpose of providing the infrastructure and undermines attempts to encourage sustainable transport.

Was at the barber's yesterday in Glasnevin, and he told me a yarn about how they are about to build Fingluas... I had to set him straight on Noel Rock.

It’s not going to be built yet but was always going to take a couple of years of design and planning before it gets to that stage anyway, good that that is starting next year so it can be built in the not too distant future.

Indeed. It seems to be at the top of the priority queue for luas extensions.

It has the advantage of having a reasonable price tag so might get pushed over the line

Since this is Finglas we're talking about, we must ask the obvious question - how is it planned to stop the new line from becoming a cesspit of crime and anti-social behaviour?

Strangely enough, they said the same thing about the red line out to Tallaght, and then they said the same thing about the green line going to Broombridge. Funny that.

I've heard the plan is to restrict access to those earning at least 50K a year and their children.

Bit harsh. Everything has been fine at Broombridge

They'll just fish the Luas out of the Liffey at the same time they are fishing out all those Dublin bikes.

You are talking about the same Luas system that runs through Drimnagh, Tallaght, Fettercairn and Broombridge right?

He's right, better not to invest in working class areas and connect them to employment hubs.

Mod: Can we talk about Infrastructure/Luas here and not make cheap political/social snide shots at those less well off and in need of decent public transport.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,719 ✭✭✭SeanW

This is not a rip on the majority of people who live in places like that. But it is an unfortunate fact that where there a lot of less well off in a densely crowded city area, very often a minority of people in those areas will "act the maggot" to put it kindly and basically spend all their time making life harder for everyone - mainly the majority decent people that live in those areas.

I've nothing against Luas to Finglas, but I'm just asking if this has been considered and what mitigation plans for anti-social behaviour would be put in place?

Things like, will slab track be used instead of ballasted track so that there's no stones that can be used as missiles? Will the stations and all track areas be well lit? Will security be present at the proposed stops?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,846 ✭✭✭✭Zebra3

As someone already pointed out the same mitigation as in other disadvantages areas

TII have tendered for a topographical survey of the proposed Luas Finglas route.

The proposed route will extended from the current Green Line terminus at Broombridge to Charlestown near the N2/M50 interchange

It'll include 4 stops, two bridges, one P&R and an extension to Broombridge depot. It'll be 4km long

Why would they be doing that now? iirc NTA dont have the resources to get this started while working on the Metrolink so it is at least a decade away at best.

It was mentioned before that as design staff were done on Metrolink they would get moved onto the Luas projects.

Which probably means that the majority of the design work on Metrolink is nearing completion

This survey won't be done particularly quickly.

Metrolink *design* work will be fundamentally complete when they go to Railway Order stage, assuming no redesigns needed. Different skillsets for different people after that.

Hopefully this could be built over the old dump and free up huge amounts of land there for housing and not go via the existing village

It's an old dump. I'd be surprised if there's any development there for another 20 years, never mind housing.

It still has vents in situ for methane to escape. This will not be suitable for building on in a lifetime

Depends on the condition of the fill. Madjeski Stadium in Reading was built over a stable but still venting dump about 7 years after it was capped.

Whereabouts is the old dump? And has there been any movement to re-zone the Dublin Industrial Estate to build residential?
