Hi all,

    Dear Boards members,

    I recently acquired a vintage photo album with Daniel O'Connell's photo and signature.

    I was wondering if there's anyway I could get an opinion from anyone who's familiar with this.

    Is there any place in Dublin where I could get it authenticated?

    well, the photo is mounted on a picture card with the signature below.

    the photo was part of the album with another 35 photos which I have yet to identify.

    I'll be back in Dublin this week so I'll get a close up photo with the piece removed from the album holder.

    Adams on Stephens Green or Whytes on Molesworth street would be your best bet for authentication/valuation; provenance of the collection would influence the value of its intrinsic parts. They sometimes have free valuation days. O'Connell died in 1847, the earliest photo of a human was in the late 1830's; I don't know enough about early photography to say if it should be on glass - could it be from a later date - i.e. a photo of a photo?

    thanks for your input mate. I'm guessing its circa 19th century as some of the other photos have dates and identification numbers on. I'll definitely drop by at Adams or Whytes if they're doing valuations, hopefully the fee isn't too much.

    thats the image alright but it's not a print as the image is mounted onto the thin card and the writing separately. i'll try to take it out and get a better photo soon! thank you!

    It might have been an O'Connell 'souvenir' that was for sale commercially.

    Photography was only in its early infancy when Daniel O'Connell died in 1847 and the photo is definitely a copy of the engraving rather than a photo of the man himself.

    It's quite possible that it was a souvenir, but in the 1840's 'cartes de visite' were printed on paper using egg-white/albumen and it could be one of those, as they were stuck to card. I don't know if DO'C had these made - if the signature is 'original' rather than a printed version it would clarify matters somewhat.

    I've got it put on adverts under the title Vintage Photo Album (Historical) but I think its inappropriate for me to put the link here, most of the photos are there. they seem to be like a collection of photos on thincards of various photographers all around Dublin and some in Drogheda. I'm guessing its some sort of publicity/advertistment kinda thing for these outlets to promote their photography which would probably make the DO'C a souvenir item as said. thanks guys, I'll put more info when I get the chance next month to get it valued at Adams, they seem to do free valuations on the last Thursday of a month I think.
