Must have been some serious sessions or get togethers....

I have seen people have just given up and are back to the usual like it's not here.

It's belmullet in particular, massive socialising around Xmas. Hotel party on Stephens day caused a huge outbreak.

Bellends, should be fined and punished for the hotel party all involved

They have always had the highest cases in Mayo, in the beginning it was due to nursing home outbreaks and in the community hospital.

Whats happened since December is down to some hotels showing a total disregard for the restrictions and people returning home from the UK basically hopping from every restaurant and gastro pub that was open without following the quarantine guidelines.

This is all from people I work with who live in the area and it is adversely affecting nearly service there.

one in every 50 people had Covid-19 in Belmullet region over last 14 days each person will spread it to 3- 5 people

Worse than that sadly, 6% had/have it.

It's actually around 1 in 17 that have tested positive given the population of the area.

It's common knowledge what happened at a certain hotel over the Christmas.

I am finding it hard to understand how it was not shut down, it took a lot of organisation and planning to do, if the reported attendance numbers are to be believed.

Did everyone just turn a blind eye? Will there be any objections to the renewal of their alcohol licence?

Has anyone heard how the business or attendees have justified their actions?

As far as I am concerned, they are responsible for deaths and prolonged lock downs.

It is very frustrating, when you do everything you can, play by the rules all year and one event wipes all that good work out in a few hours.

But they had their fun, and that's all that matters.

Did this happen when the Hotel was meant to be closed (residents only) or was it just before the Christmas and no distancing rules were implemented?

A law upon themselves down there. There was a pub open too and not to mention the hoards who travelled home from the UK. Hope they are happy with the death and destruction they have caused. Unforgivable.

The hotel in question (I don't want to be sued so lets call it the NarrowDanger) completely took the p*ss with the happy cooperation of some locals. They went along with local people booking rooms for both the All Ireland final and another session for New Years as a work around to them being able to get pints.

Anecdotally, they knew they were f*cked and actually tried to stop/reduce proceedings when it became clear there were scores of people getting drunk with no distancing. Authorities had nothing close to the man power to be able to help them out at that point though.

If you go on RIP.ie, you can see that only 2 people died in Belmullet in the whole month of December (not counting anyone who is formerly of Belmullet). In 3 weeks in January, that's at 8 people and surely going to increase further.

The behaviour of the hotel and a section of the community has cost neighbours their lives. I hope people remember that in future when booking a hotel in the area for a function.

Local news stated this week it would be looked into.

That hotel should have it's drink license removed. They could see it a mile off. Lads coming home for UK booking in, in the session, circulating with their families and friends!! It's mind boggling the idiocy and arrogance of those involved.
I was stood for 30 mins at the entrance to the Mchale park test center and it's shocking the number of cars going in.

I think a pub in laois that broke guidelines had its license renewal denied. Gardai requested it due to non-compliance and the judge agreed. Given the gards are involved in that place now they should also be recommending a refusal to grant renewal.

I dont quite understand this, was the license renewal refused?

Cant see anything happening with the hotel in Belmullet if the pub in Achill is any indication

Dunno about that - it's the cause of belmullet having the worst outbreak in the country at a time Ireland had the worst incidence rate in the world. People are dying now and the locals that weren't involved are spitting feathers. Lots of boycotts going on apparently.

And yeah, laois pub refused renewal, first one in the country.

A judge has refused to renew the licence of a pub in Co Laois after gardaí objected, citing breaches of Covid-19 restrictions during the pandemic.

    Article in Irish times today
    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/ireland/irish-news/how-did-a-remote-mayo-town-become-ireland-s-most-covid-infected-place-1.4465431

They approached the hotel who said they had a quiet Christmas. You would think after the mayo match they would have had the cop on not to do it again on Stephens night

Just read that there. Hotel can take a lot of responsibility but the lack of personal responsibility and idiocy of some you can't teach.

Why are people not naming the hotel ? Surely they deserve to be named and shamed . If I knew of such a huge breach of rules I would never set foot in that hotel again

Belmullet geographically is a coronavirus cruise ship on land. They should be curfewed and patrolled with shopping deliveries made to their doors for 2 weeks

The Irish times spoke to the owner of the hotel in that article and gives the hotel and owner name allegedly involved. They deny it

Crazy they are. Compounds the issue.
And the local councillor making that statement to be honest is embarrassing.

Interesting quote in the article is that the hotel staff were overwhelmed and couldnt do anything about it.

They could have stopped serving alcohol for a start and go to suspect rooms and remove people who werent guests.

    its not rocket science !

    Neanderthals!

People getting into the hotel through windows.
Jesus how desperate for a sup of alcohol do you have to be.

I really enjoyed the times I've been there.
In fairness to the staff and what I've heard, they tried to stop people staying there bringing in their friends, they resorted to opening back doors and windows and letting people in.
The residents also got drink to their rooms.

The guards were over whelmed but!!!, The lack of cop on by the people is shocking.

Not sure what will happen up there. But there should be a lot of people who need a serious chat with themselves

Licensing court time will be interesting. People who lost relatives will want to see action taken.
