No claims bonus question

My uncles car insurance is due for renewal on the 15th of November. But last year on the 2nd of December he was in a small accident which unfortunately resulted in a claim against his insurance and the loss of his no claims discount which he had previously built up to the maximum.

His No claim discount certificate says "Number of years claim free on this policy = 0" but then it has him at 1 year 35% discount on their scale.

When he is shopping around for a better quote, can he put down 1 year with no claims if he only has 49 weeks with no claims?

Or would a better option be for him to allow the insurance to expire on November 15th then not drive the car until December 3rd and then insure it as 1 year with no claims?

He could easily manage not driving the car for 3 weeks with the current lock-down restrictions in place as he works within walking distance and I could take him to the shops so it wouldn't really be a problem for him.

    It doesn’t work like that.

What do you mean? How does it work or what have I got wrong?

He won’t have had a full insured year so won’t have a bonus. If you put down incorrect info they may cancel the policy, then he’s rightly screwed as nobody will want to quote.

So would waiting for the 3 weeks to pass and then insuring the car on December 3rd not be an option for him?
Would that not mean that he would have had no claims for a year?

It seems a bit harsh that he is only 3 weeks from having the full year that's why I am trying to see what his options are before he starts ringing them.

it's not 1 year since your last claim bonus. it's ayear of claim free driving. if you claim during a year that year is not claim free

does he not have any kind of step back or ncb protection?

He will probably find sticking to his current insurer will be cheapest, at least until he gets a fresh year under his belt.

Unfortunately he did not have any step back or ncb protection.

Yeah, it's looking like that could be his only option at this stage. It's just a shame that it happened just 3 weeks into his policy last year. Just bad luck really.

If he presents the ncb he had at renewal ‘19 along with this year’s renewal it’ll prove that it’s a once off claim and Axa, Allianz and brokers will allow him the step back scale on their ncb quotes.
