Alex Albon - How much more rope will Red Bull give him?

    We know Alex is a good driver, he did well last year, and without the 2 tangles with Hamilton he would certainly have had his first podium by now.

    However, Red Bull are known to be extremely ruthless with their drivers, Gasly was shunted to the B team to allow Albon his chance in the Red Bull. How much more time will Marko and Horner give him?

    At the moment his confidence must be rock bottom as he has been struggling with the flighty 2020 Red Bull aerodynamics, and a country mile off his teammate Verstappen.

    Personally I would give him until the end of the season to prove himself, but Red Bull are not known for their patience, what do ye, the denizens of boards.ie Motorsport think is likely to happen, and how would ye handle it if it were up to you?

    Red Bull will give him until end of season then maybe look at replacing him with Vettel. Whether Vettel will go back is another question. Vettel won't match Max for pace.

    Are there other good options at the moment mid season other than bringing back Gasly or Kvyat? Maybe Vettel for next year. On a wider note there is a definite second driver problem in Red Bull and how they are handled. It's the Max show there and being the #2 is not easy in that team.

    Let's be realistic here though. Gasly was dismal in last year's car. He didn't have the wherewithall or confidence to make passes last year. He wasn't great at qualifying and went backwards during the race. Albon may not be the best qualifier, but he always makes good progress during the race and end up in a decent position.

    People get too hooked up on the pace and the gap between max and him but he is bringing in decent points and a good result when he finishes. Can't see him going anywhere.

    Red bull burn through drivers far too quickly in recent years. The issue they have is who they put in the seat if they get rid of Albon. Is there anyone to fill the it? I don't see Gasly getting it as the car didn't suit him last year. Maybe give it to Kvyat but will be cause Max problems?

    Any of the F2 drivers with enough points for a Superlicense?

    Sure hasn't Max had all three of them as team mates. Kvyat, Gasly and Albon? All three have looked better in the B car than they did in the A team.

    Leave albon there. He will come good yet.
    Red bull are a joke the way they cast drivers aside.

    Vergne surely had a good career in f1 ahead of him.... i remember he seemed to be very much the equal of D Ric but Ric got promotion and vergne was sent home.

    I think they will let him see out this season and then think about it all depending on how the rest of the races go. They could always let him go to Alpha Tirea and promote Danil Kvyat to Red Bull.

    Agree, Vergne was great and could have done very well. Look at the impact he had in FE. Also Red Bull should not have let Sainz go so easily, he probably is that Ricciardo level driver they now need and would have pushed Max.

    I think they either put in Seb next year as a "kimi" role, happy to be a solid #2, or alternatively they sign someone outside the stable.
    None of the redbull drivers other than max, have shown enough talent to be worthy of a drive in the A team

    Albon got lapped by Max today. That's pretty bad. He couldn't catch Vettel at the end in that rubbish Ferrari on 30+ lap old softs either.

    I defended Albon earlier in this thread but today was an absolute shocker from him. The strategy of putting him on hards in the second stint wasn't great but still he was very bad today.

    I honestly think Gasly is miles better than Albon. Albon always appears to come across as bitter on the radio too when driving, as if everyone is against him. He's not great. Imagine if Max had a teammate up there with him today?

    RB screwed Albon's race with the awful hard tyre, but that said he is now scraping the same barrel Gasly was before he got dropped.

    Gasly would just get thrown about by the management in RB again if he moved back up. And they don't care about their second driver in RB. They tested the hard tyre today at the expense of Albon's race. He wasn't doing that great languishing in 6th but that's just the way it is. You can't have two Verstappens, but they need two of they want to start manipulating races with Merc.

    Albon needs to do a Sainz and get out of there. Maybe try get into a Sauber Alfa Romeo.

    Gasly stated last year that he did not like how the red bull car drove or how your were supposed to drive it. He felt the Toro(Alpha Tauri) handled way better for him and he could put it where he wanted . He is kinda been proven correct this year with his Qualifying performances .

    If they Dump Albon , he will be replaced by an outside driver , I don't think they will bring Gasly back up , and oddly they won't use Dani K even though he actually preformed pretty well with his turn in the Redbull despite what alot of people think of him his results were good.

    Albon needs a good run at Spa , a decent qual session and end up around 5 or 6th so he can be used to influence the race out come . Currently cannot see that happening . And the pressure is only building around him . Tough spot to be in . Only worse would be in Vettels position , at least Albon can drive him self out of his problems .

    He's not doing that badly so he deserves another full season to develop. It would look ridiculous if Gasly were to be promoted again at his expense. The other option would be to recruit an experienced driver from outside the stable like Perez or Hulkenberg but neither of those would be an upgrade on Albon necessarily. The fact is if Max Verstappen is your team mate with preferred status within the team then most drivers would appear inadequate by comparison with him.

    Albon needs to get the car near the front in quali. He will continue to struggle if he doesn't as strategy and everything else will be against him if he is always a few places behind.
    That said he should have won a race already so things could work out for him yet.
