I don't understand why Americans would ban culchie since that word doesn't exist in their vocabulary.Hillbilly, redneck, etc does though.I'm just baffled.

Yeah they say hayseed, hick and yokel too. But they’d be more akin to bumpkin, mullagh, bogtrotter, mulchie, ocker and other, more negative, “country” slurs.

But terms like culchie, itself, and townie, bogger, traveller, bogmen, rustics etc are just standard terms from our “rural” counterparts. They can subdivide themselves as much as they want.

    The tide is turning…

They're banning haymakers from boxing because it's offensive to boxer's.

Nick name's are banned too, because some purple haired dude who's gender no 47 was called 74 .

    Dude isn't appropriate either.

Smiling is banned because that's perceived as being sneaky, no more laughing either

FFS so the hope of humanity now lies with the soft millennials to guide humanity. We are all fcuked. When did it become acceptable to be a pussy?

That word pussy is banned too, because it's only right to call a cat a feline.

So never hurt a cat's felines, feelings sorry.

The Irish word Bó as well as focail will be banned too.

Bó sounds like bow, which is a dangerous weapon.

These fruitcakes are absolute pussy's and they're getting away with their mantra.
But you have to remember they're a tiny minority.
So nobody really takes them seriously, they're kind of telpu's as in look at that creature God help us...

I don't know any one who's one of those snowflakes, they're usually on board's and other site's, YouTube etc

    They're just not well.

As the title says apparantly scrabble will ban culchie and other terms deemed offensive. How would yanks (maybe yank is now offensive sorry mods) know the word culchie or does it mean something different over there?
    #culchielivesmatter

Actually under the current climate who on boards is going to be playing scrabble in America anytime soon.
Now that I said that at least one cabbage is going to say they are

I know you're probably trying to wind people up but on the off chance that you're serious let me enlighten you.

Culchie has been a synonym for country bumpkin for as long as I can remember, it's usually listed as a synonym in dictionaries; see https://www.lexico.com/definition/culchie under synonyms. I've seen culchies portrayed as bumpkins many many times in the media, usually in humourous way but that was the portrayal nonetheless.
As for redneck and hillbilly, they are US equivalents of culchie, in fact if you look up the list of banned words culchie is there alongside redneck. Also, hillbilly has a rural Irish/Scots-Irish etymology.

Also your definition of rural, albeit in inverted commas, is ridiculous. A townie by definition is not rural and afaik the CSO and OSI only regards towns of less than 2,000 people to be rural otherwise they are urban. Travellers are urban and rural but I'd say the vast majority live in towns and cities and fyi there are many born, bred and living in Dublin.

There are a lot of Irish immigrants and first and second generation Irish Americans in the US, also Americans that have worked in Ireland or are familiar with Irish culture would be familiar with the term, so in that respect it could be said to be part of the vast ethnic American vocabulary.

But you also have the vast southern folk embracing the hillbilly, redneck way of like.Even Duck Dynasty built their image on that. The dynamics of the South is very different to the North in America,The Northern folk will always berate southern lifestyles as backwards. It is a never ending cycle at this stage.

I absolutely value freedom. So if a Scrabble players association change their rules for their competitions it has zero impact on my life. They have every right to do so.

I will never be playing competitive Scrabble so I don't need to worry about it. If I'm playing Scrabble at home I can still use whatever words I want.

Of all the things going on in the world the actions of Scrabble players association should not really be high on anyone's list of priorities.

Very true, I was watched ‘Ken Burns’ Country Music’ recently and, in it, one of the first groups were called “The Hillbillys” and early country was known as “hillbilly music”.

The reason the band were called “The Hillbillys” because when they were asked what they should be called they responded with something like ‘call us what you want, we’re just a bunch of hillbillys’.

A lot of the time it depends on who’s using the “term”, and how. If a yank calls use a “Paddy” it’s no big deal but if a Brit does it we get offended.

    It’s all about perspective, people.

    The tide is turning…

There's a lot going on in the world alright, but some of us can rise above.

So why are you suggesting that the rules of Scrabble isn't high on your agenda ?

There's focail reason to ban words because people will just find new words to workaround a ban. You are just driving the problem underground until the new words become known and then banned.

Gaze : Two men who who look steadily and longingly into each other's eyes.

I don't want to live in a world where old literature gets banned because the words used were OK then but were changed in meaning because other words were banned by people who wanted to sweep things under the rug rather than confronting the attitudes.

There was a time when blasphemy was a very, very serious issue. Back then they punished people who used words incorrectly rather than banning the words.

Listened to a quick interview with the scrabble guys behind this decision. They're just not going to award points for Intentionally offensive words. At the moment they award points for any proper word that appears in the formal dictionaries. They're not going to award points for words like the dreaded n word.

The guy commented that if you have the letters for the dreaded n word then you could just play the word 'ginger' instead. Which I thought was funny.

Well, unless it doesn't fit on the board of course.

Not to mention that "ginger" is a bit of an insulting term too, in its own small way. Certainly as insulting as culchie anyway.

Not even remotely! and I say that as a red haired ruralite.

Pronounced to rhyme with "singer" and it is intended as an insult.

It's minor of course - around the same severity as "culchie".

You can't argue one and not the other I think. (I'll argue neither is insulting of course)

You're contradicting yourself, you literally (;)) said "Not to mention that "ginger" is a bit of an insulting term too, in its own small way" in your previous post. And as I indicated from the point of view of this red haired ruralite, it's not even remotely as insulting irrespective of how ginger is pronounced.
