Falcons WR Julio Jones doesn't plan to report to camp

The Atlanta Falcons will open training camp without their best player.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Julio Jones does not plan to report to camp on Thursday, per sources informed of the decision. The wideout is comfortable sitting out all of camp, Rapoport added.

Jones skipped all offseason team workouts -- he did attend Matt Ryan's passing camp earlier this month -- in hopes of getting a new contract.

With three seasons left on Jones' current deal, the Falcons have balked at acquiescing to the All-Pro receiver. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero previously reported Atlanta brass promised Jones they'd work on a contract re-do after the 2018 season.

Apparently, that's not an acceptable compromise for Jones.

Yes, but we know what else Brady did for the rest of the season. And previous seasons. It’s why there wasn’t a decision to be made. Maybe 5 games is a better way for others to make a rational and unbiased judgement.

Part of me thinks he’s worth the money, but then I think you’re only 2years into the deal you signed.
Is an unthinkable trade fore coming?

It's frightening when you realise that it's nine years since Hazy's set up the first one of these threads.

The mood music coming from Indianapolis about Andrew Luck is very promising this season. He is participating in camp and expected to start the first pre-season game.

The AFC south is shaping up to be the most imponderable division in football:

Texans - star-studded, potentially elite defence, albeit with their star coming back from serious injury. Ridiculously exciting quarterback, although Watson is also coming back from injury. Could get anywhere between 3 and 13 wins realistically.

Colts - if Luck is back playing well, they are well set. They have invested in their OL and their running game. The D remains a problem, but they have some young talent and a new co-ordinator so they could also bomb or soar.

Jaguars - they were this close (my index finger and thumb are really close together) to getting to the Super Bowl last year. Their defence is scarily good, their quarter back has looked scarily bad at times.

Titans - they looked bad at times last season, with many stars underperforming, yet they still made the playoffs. What will happen with a new regime in place in Tennessee?

Ah yes, you've gotta love day 1 of training camp optimism.

AFC south is generally all over the place, but if things go right, you could see 3 teams from the division in the play offs

Real potential to go from Zero's to Hero's if they can keep everyone playing

Need to see what Luck is like, O-line additions will certainly help, 6 wins imo assuming Luck plays the year

Jaguars - they were this close (my index finger and thumb are really close together) to getting to the Super Bowl last year. Their defence is scarily good, their quarter back has looked scarily bad at times.

imo Bortles goes back to his 2016 version, their defence wont be as impactful as last year

Titans were great last year, mariota was poor for long stretches, defense bailed out the offence a huge amount.

Players seem to have taken to Vrabel, he's inexperienced, but his OC/DC are very experienced.. Titans to the AFC championship game baby!

Titans for the AFC championship game ? It's not exactly Vince "dream team" young territory yet Heli but you'd want to watch that talk, at least this early in the year. I mean I'm all for a bit of off season optimism but let's be fair here.

Possible but that would be more about the poor quality of the AFC than anything else.

Maybe someone in San Diego cursed the team. They had some really bad luck in the early games last season. A field goal here and there and it would have been a different story.

Not sure we’ll ever get the answer as to why he didn’t play.
    Hope he does well.
Titans lining up with 2 exPats CBs next season, Butler and Ryan.

I see that Matt Patricia's attempt to bring the 'Patriot Way' to Detroit is already going down the plug-hole -

Stop the press, players don't like running sprints!

And training camp has been on for 3 whole days.

Jesus Christ JRG, you've well and truly jumped the shark at this stage. You're like a parody of the old JRG! :pac:

Not NFL but this story made me laugh. They go 2-10 but as there's only 4 teams in the league, they all make it to the playoffs.

    https://deadspin.com/a-two-win-team-won-the-arena-football-league-title-1827967107

And the guy who owns the Washington Capitals owns both teams that made the final so at the outset he had a 50% chance of winning the title and that increased to 100% after the first round of the playoffs.

That article is near two months old

Sure the players could have adapted to the new head coach and his methods by now. In early June he would have had not much contact with the veterans, just a few days in OTA's

Veterans whinge, same on every team

except in that really, really poor piece of journalism, the veterans werent whinging, it was a reporter making his own assumptions. Same reporter then went on to say that he missed Coach Caldwell. So it is pretty clear he has a huge bias in his piece.

Yeah same, only spotted this in passing yesterday. Could someone post in the old one that there's a new thread before closing it. Presume there's a good few subscribers missing their weird and wacky fix.

After the signing of Sam Darnold, Roquan Smith of the Bears is now the only first round pick who has not signed a contract.

His agency is the same that negotiated for Joey Bosa last year.

It's a little unclear what the hold up is, but Bears HC Matt Nagy suggested it was to do with the new helmet contact rules. Because the NFL have been unable to explain clearly how it will work, Smith as an LB is worried that he could incur a suspension just because of the messy arbitrary way it might get applied (will get applied, going on all recent experience with the NFL), and under current contract rules that might entitle the Bears to wipe some of his guarantees, even though they have never done that before, like with Trevathan last year.

BUT, there's been suggestions that it's a bigger problem. The contracts teams have been giving out include language that allows them to void guarantees purely based on a player saying or doing something that they perceive to be damaging to the club and its reputation (at their sole discretion, as the language of the contract has it). The NFLPA has warned agents that this language has become more vague and all-encompassing gradually with the passing years. So Smith's people are challenging it. It's worth noting that several players like Trumaine Edmunds and Todd Gurley have had this language waived from their contracts, so there is a precedent there.

Either way the whole thing makes the Bears look very bad, in my opinion. They are holding out on a very badly needed top ten pick and stalling his development, basically over pocket change to them (but not pocket change to him). Hypothetical pocket change at that. Or they are making a stand to protect ludicrous levels of team control over their players. If they weren't such a crappy team you might think they can stand on principle but they need all the help they can get, and Smith needs all the training and preseason he can get. Amateur hour from the Bears again, in other words, and it will leave Smith bitter and disaffected from this team when it comes time to negotiate again in a few years (if they even get him signed this time).

From a wider league point of view, it sounds like they are making this stand so that teams can enforce their Trump hole-licking new rules about player protests. But that's just my opinion. Either way it's a mess, but probably great news for the Packers going into Week 1.

Jaysus Bears, sign him up. If he produces then you'll be paying him a pittance of what he's actually worth for four years on the rookie contract. The HOF game is on Thursday and surely a rookie like Smith would be used significantly during pre-season to get him up to speed.

Yeah he needs to be getting all the practices he can get so he's ready to go week 1. This is a top ten pick we're talking about, on a team that has lost 30 games since this GM came on board. I have a bad feeling this is a sign that nothing much has changed really at the Bears, penny wise pound foolish as always.

Yeah, that particular reporter is well known in Detroit for his constant criticism of the team & its coaches.
No one takes him seriously at all.
