If on desktop then Libreoffice is an opensource office suite available at no cost. Writer is the word processing component. It will read and create word files. It has its quirks but then again so does Ms-Word.

If on mobile (as is the name of the forum) the Microsoft Word can actually be free. Otherwise something like Polaris Office might work for you.

Now that i think of it, with a free Microsoft Account you can get online versions of Word for free.

My first choice is also LibreOffice. But Apache OpenOffice is another option: https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html

    Nice! It's both cross-platform and open-source.

You could try SoftMaker FreeOffice TextMaker. It is available on Windows and GNU/Linux, among other OSes.

I was a user of Open Office and Libre Office but now I just use Google Apps, top right (the square of nine dotes) on a Google screen. Now that I have rural broadband, a cloud based solution is as good as any other.

Google Sheets is great for all my spreadsheet needs. Google Docs handles any document I could want for. A power user might want something on the desktop. In which case, the Open/Libre route it is.
