Tal Coyle qualifies safely for Friday's women's final. A good finish there and she may have done enough to make the World Cup final in June (first Tokyo qualification opportunity) without even having to do the 3rd or 4th World Cup events.

Tough for Eilidh Price - finished 37th of 79 today- 36 qualify for final, she missed out by 1 point; that's one second on the laser run, half a second in the swim, one extra hit in the fence. Good first outing of year but very unfortunate to miss out.

Sive Brassil was 4 points back in 40th overall. Although very close again, that is now 2 failures to qualify in a row for her this year. She is already on the back foot at this early stage of the season, wont be happy.

No qualification for Arthur LOK yesterday in somewhat bizarre circumstances. Gun total malfunction in the middle of the laser run as explained on twitter. He says also that he's had 8 weeks off with injury and was coming in here off a curtailed preparation.

Tal finished off the pace in 19th in the final of World Cup 2 today. Fence result wasn't as good as in recent events. The horse she drew didn't seem great either.

Its only because of the high standards she has been setting for herself that makes a result like this a bit disappointing. Not a disaster by any means though.

So World Cup 3 was on last week in Hungary and a pretty mixed bag for the Irish.

Tal Coyle didn’t compete, she must feel she has done enough in the World Cup series to make the final, and first Tokyo qualification opportunity, in June.

Sive and Elidh competed and both made the final which is what you hope to be seeing from them. Sive 16th and Elidh 24th in the final. Hard to say which of them would be happier, Sive needed a good finish, which she got, but Elidh seemed rusty in the fence especially so she may have a lot more improvement ito come. Sive still under pressure to consolidate as the Irish No 2.

Less good from Arthur Lannigan O’Keeffe. He took the last automatic qualification in his section but just didn’t fence or run well in the final and finished down in 20th. He is letting it be known after the event on his social media that he has missed a lot of training through injury but still ……..

You couldn’t call is a loss of form yet but it has to be said he was absolutely flying all last year, so speaking as a supporter I am a bit concerned.

Pretty good showing from the Irish at World Cup 4 over in Prague at the weekend

The 3 Irish women Tal, Sive and Eilidh all made the final in which they finished up 9th, 14th and 26th respectively. If you wanted to nitpick, Tal did go into the combined in joint 3rd so a bit disappointing that she would drop 6 places. Sive had a good event, Eilidh is being held back a bit by her fencing. If she could improve that she would probably be neck and neck with Sive. Anyway based on their early season results all 3 have now qualified for the World Cup final at the end of June in Tokyo where the prize for the winner is early qualification for the Olympics.

In the men’s event Arthur LOK had a much better outing this time. In the final he recovered well after a bad start in the fence, rode superbly – best of the field- and then just dropped a couple of placings in the combined to finish up 8th. He is also into the Tokyo final at the end of June if he chooses to travel.

It will be interesting to see whether the squad do go out to Tokyo in June now actually. The Euros in Bath early August where top 8 qualify is the real target. Some or all of them may prefer to avoid a long haul trip in the build-up.

Crunch time for the Irish pentathletes at the European Championships in Bath this week from tomorrow. 8 Tokyo places up for grabs in the mens and womens.

Word on the street is Arthur LOK has a niggle and hasn't been able to train for the past while which would be a disaster because he has built around this week probably for the past 2 years.

Tal Coyle should be in with a very good chance, that said she hasn't had a great season so far but didn't qualify automatically for London or Rio so wouldn't be fazed by having to fall back on the ranking list qualification route.

Of the other 2 Irish women Sive Brassil and Elidh Price, either of them on their day and with a good dose of luck could challenge for a top 8.

BBC digital are streaming all week but I assume that is geo blocked from Ireland (?). UIPM website should also be streaming the finals on Saturday and Sunday.

Arthur finished up 17/12 in the fencing to be joint 8th in his semi as it stands. He will move up a couple of places at least after the swim and should then be comfortable to be in the top 15 automatic qualifiers for the final after the combined run/shoot.

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭Pierre de Coubertin

Arthur up to 5th in his semi after the swim - he has 36 seconds in hand of the guy in 15th place so shouldn't have any problem making the final.

Strong combined for Arthur and smooth qualification for Saturday's final - placed 3rd but same points as winner and 2nd

    1 Pavlo TYMOSHCHENKO 1141
    2 Marvin Faly DOGUE 1141
    3 Arthur LANIGAN-O KEEFFE 1141

Brits will have a good standard of horse there.

    8 Natalya COYLE 502
    9 Zsofia FOLDHAZI 486
    10 Elena MICHELI 485
    11 Annika SCHLEU 483
    12 Karolina KRENKOVA 481
    13 Gintare VENCKAUSKAITE 479
    14 Polina MATYUKHEVICH 476
    15 Ipek AKSIN 472
    16 Joanna MUIR 468
    17 Gulnaz GUBAYDULLINA 467
    18 Eilidh PRISE 466

Tal in 8th going into the combined now with 30 seconds in hand of 15th place. Eilidh Prise is thereabouts – top 15 next best 6 from the 2 semis qualify so if she even holds in 18th place she has a good chance

Sive Brassil is in the early stages of her fence in the second semi after a good swim.

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭Pierre de Coubertin

    Tal qualifies safely in 6th.

Eilidh is 19th so is currently the 4th best non automatic qualifier as it stands before the other group do the combined. She might still be lucky.

Sive sitting 11th before the combined in the other semi so very hopeful for her

Edit - Sive qualified in 9th- great performance. Eilidh didn't go through, the other group was way ahead and she missed out by 28 points which isn't close really.

Didn't happen unfortunately for Arthur yesterday, and now confirmed in his social media that the injury rumours were all too real. Turned up "loaded on painkillers" this week.

The whole season has been a disaster for Arthur. Hard to shake the feeling he may have over trained and peaked last year just when his rivals were having a down season. He is also maybe a bit too open on social media about the psychology of competition and his emotional state when things go wrong. While he gets a lot of affirmation and likes from all that, he may be indirectly putting himself under even more pressure to perform.

Going much better for Tal so far in the women's final. She is in 5th after the fencing. You would be hoping she manages a decent ride and carnage for those around her.

Sive is well back at this stage.

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭Pierre de Coubertin

Tal due to jump soon live on uipm.TV.

No excuses now. She has drawn the best horse in the field AND there IS carnage all around!

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭Pierre de Coubertin

Oh yes. One fence and a couple of time faults and Tal now in 4th with just the combined to come. She has a buffer of around 20- 25 secs in terms of the qualification places so should be celebrating tonight fingers crossed.

Edit 23 seconds in hand of the last qualification spot as it stands. Only 4 seconds off the podium also.

    Tokyo ticket booked by Tal!

Sive 16th for important ranking list points.

Got a bit tight at the end, only two points (seconds?) separating 8th, 9th and 10th according to the results. Edit: From the commentary she would have been comfortable anyway as some countries had multiple finishers in the Top 10.

Anyway, Great to see Natalya going to Tokyo.

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭Pierre de Coubertin

Yeah she finished 8th in the event but was actually the 4th qualifier so reasonably comfortable in the end. Was tense during the run though, they don't pay much attention to those outside the top few on the live stream

First 2020 ranking event started today in Cairo. Tal Coyle and especially Sive Brassil looking great in both qualifying from the women's' semis. Crucial ranking points are available if Sive can finish well in the final on Friday and she looks in top form based on her performance today. Tal is already Tokyo qualified of course.

Arthur LOK is in the same position as Sive but with a lot more expectation, and therefore pressure, on him after his injury plagued 2019. He needs to lay down a marker this week starting with the men's semi tomorrow.

As an aside, our other world class senior pentathlete Eilidh Prise seems to be taking a break from the sport. Disappointing as she was a former youth european champion when competing for GB before she switched to us, and had been operating at least at the same sort of level as Sive for the past couple of years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭Pierre de Coubertin

Arthur very slow swim today (2.06 when he would be doing close to 2.00 usually - strange), but safely qualifies for Saturday men's final anyway. He fenced and ran very well.

Modern Pentathlon back today in Budapest with the first of 3 ranking competitions over the next 3 weeks.

Arthur LOK, Sive Brassil and Tal Coyle (already qualified) go for Ireland. Arthur and Sive need the ranking points, but with the whole sport out of action for the past 12 months who knows what form anybody will be in.

    Good news from Budapest.

    Both girls into the final.

Tal through 6th in her group just a few seconds off the top qualifiers, seems to been a comfortable enough day for her.

Sive had to battle, she was only 24th of 27 in her group after the fencing with only the top 10 to qualify automatically - great effort to run up into 10th place and make it.

Sive's heat was won by a 13 year old from Japan! She ended up with the top score overall too.

Natalya was 11th and Sive was 17th overall

Remarkable performance from the young Japanese girl.

It will be very interesting to see how she rides tomorrow. Also, the experienced athletes look to conserve energy in the qualification group so wouldnt not have being giving everything against her.

I have to say though IMO it isnt a great look for the sport if a 13 year old can come along and do that in a senior Olympic Games qualifier.

  • Registered Users Posts: 77 ✭✭Pierre de Coubertin

So Arthur in a spot of bother potentially. Swam great, then had a bad fence (21st of 30 in his group) and is now lying in 19th place ahead of the combined with just the top 10 to qualify for the final.

He is 27 seconds behind 10th place as it stands.

    No joy unfortunately.

He ran up to 15th in his group from 19th, but the damage was done in the fencing, just had too much to do.

49th placed finisher overall. Pretty sobering.
