Few pictures of the rust on mine. Have an appointment to have it looked at next Tuesday.

I have similar blistering around the arches on mine, just where it joins the bumper.

Not sure whether to put on long finger and get a wheel arch cover:

I know it'll get worse underneath - but I won't be doing anything with it until next year anyway.

They actually look well and I'd be tempted at that price but they will also need to be painted so I wouldn't bother putting them on until you get the rust sorted.

My main concern with mine is how quick they've deteriorated.

Yeah, they look better than the matt black or chrome versions you'd see. I'm re-spraying the wipers and front grill anyway myself so was thinking could do arch covers while I'm at it. I might get a rough quote to repair & respray arches first but I can't see it being less than a few hundred, or am I way off??

The previous owner had a carport and it was pretty much blister free when I got it. If it's not under cover/in a shed, any small chips or marks seem to brown over/rust fairly quick.

I've a side awning tent that uses the figure of eight fitting - but it marks the roof gutter, so I've these really small little brown marks showing up. Not sure how to tackle them.

Re: your arches deteriorating quick - The inner arches do build up a lot of soil/muck inside the lip, I'd usually clear it out by hand otherwise it's only speeding up the rust. And I have a tin of thick car wax that I smear a good covering over the outside arch that seems to help.

Polishing and Waxing the whole van also seems to keep things at bay. I'm getting this on Thursday...

Always wanted one, just so I can make my own mind up whether they're as bad as I hear :D

Pair of replacement arches here for UK£75:

I think transit and sprinter arches fit with a bit of work - and maybe cheaper & easier got.

Cosmetic all of it. Tin is sacrificial, it's the steel I'd worry about. Nothing to fix you're entirely in touch up territory.
As far as I can tell you don't need any of that metal to hold yer suspension on. :P

You could try this stuff ...good enough for steel hulled vessels. Treatment and primer in one.

Thanks for the tip, ordered two of the small bottles - will let you know how it goes.

    Two small bottles! :pac:

    You'll be grand. I go though 2-3 litres a year! :o

He wouldn't post the bigger ones! I'd say it'll be loads anyway.

2-3 litres a year - Is there any metal left?? ðŸ˜

Not meaning to highjack your thread at all Simona1986, but this might be of interest to yourself or others with a Bongo.

Got to have a go at sorting out some surface rust on my own Bongo. There were a few small areas that were bothering me - the rain gutter, the rear arches and the tailgate.

I got the Vactan on Sir Liamalot's recommendation - it was very easy to use, so thanks for that (and I've loads left ;) )
Used a wire brush set to get off any blisters around the van, and then used a small kids paint brush to apply. Did three to four coats all over and it already looks miles better.

Going to order some touch-up paint, not willing to chance a DIY spray.. well maybe the tailgate, but we'll see.
While I was at it, I removed the front grill and gave that a spray. Did this and the wiper arms before when I first got the van and it made a huge difference.

DOE last week, road trip tomorrow with the kids and sleeping out in it on Saturday. Roll on the summer!

    By all means!

I ordered the Vactan myself, have to collect it from Parcel Motel on the way home tonight.

Like you, I also made a start on the rust treatment. Mine looks a lot worse than yours but most of it is DIYable:

Will get the vactan on tonight and then apply filler on the above bits.

One issue was the last arch we tackled seemed to be held together with filler.

Hoping to get it welded on Thursday and then will get started on painting this weekend.

That's gone through but could be a lot worse - you're right, I'd try a DIY aswell.

How are you planning to paint? The more i think of it, using touch up paint and a brush on my own might look really noticeable, especially on any larger patches.

Is spraying bodywork very hard to get right, or is a lot of it down to the prep and masking off areas?

Past DOE, had both sills weld and backend! all re sprayed. the hassel was taking out all full conversion kit inside before went for welding (in case of fire). any how should be a better van now, as I sound proofed the floor. also fully waxoil underneath. lots of little things iron out too. main worry at moment is gears are slow to change when cold, level is good but put 500ml just in case, yet to test.

Glad to hear. Looks like you'll be able to get proper use of it for the summer.

    Gear box oil?
Too much is bad, only use enough until it comes back out the filler cap on a square level surface.

I'd change the oil. Then I'd have a look at the clutch cylinders for drips, then I'd start thinking clutch gubbins.

How are you planning to paint?

I just went whole hog and decided to paint the whole van.

    I'm using this technique: http://wiki.club8090.co.uk/index.php/Bodywork_and_Glass_Roller_painting

It took us about 3 full days to do the body work:

Filling all the spots where there had been rust and sanding smooth where we'd filled or had welding done...

    416982.jpg

    416983.jpg

    416984.jpg

    And keying the existing paint...

It looked pretty poor after one coat - patchy in places:

    416987.jpg

    416988.jpg

    416989.jpg

Because of this, I didn't do any flatting back before applying the second coat.

    Currently looking like this:

    416990.jpg

    416991.jpg

It looks great from a distance but up close it is quite orange peely and there are one or two patches where it's still a bit patchy.

I plan on doing the first flatting back this weekend and then adding another coat of paint if I've time. Then I'll give it another week or so before flatting and doing a final coat, then flat again and polish - hopefully giving a good finish. I've a bit of clean up to do here and there and then will probably spray the front grille black as it will be hard to match the colour perfectly. After two full coats of the van I've hardly used half of a 2.5l can!

  • Registered Users Posts: 173 ✭✭judgefoozle

I'd looked into that paint method before, but wouldn't suit what I need. That's a serious amount of work done. Fair play.

You could also go light green with your front grille - to match your roof tent :)

Paint / Bongo looks great and good luck with any further repairs.

Can you tell me where you got the Rustolium paint? Is it readily available over here, I've not seen it widely stocked.

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,805 ✭✭✭Alkers

I got it in stillorgan decor, who had a very limited range. I was in contact with the supplier who said they could get any colour from the range but anything coming from the UK would be subject to £30 additional stocking fee. I can give you the contacts next week if you on me, away for the weekend!

Is anyone planning on attending the NI Bongo Fury event in Co. Down? I think it's May 25th - 27th. I've let my Bongo Fury membership lapse and apparently the guy organising it is insisting on a two night stay so I'm thinking I might just unofficially attend for one night...

Don't really check BongoFury website - I could've been interested but I'm already away that weekend, and hopefully with the van!

I've some work planned for my own so it's off the road - I'm in no rush to get it back but hopefully April/May I'll be using it again.
