    THE COMPLETE PINK FLOYD CATALOGUE TO BE AVAILABLE ON VINYL
    On Friday 3rd June 2016, Pink Floyd Records will begin the reintroduction of the Pink Floyd catalogue on vinyl for the first time in over two decades. The first four records will be The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, A Saucerful of Secrets, the soundtrack from the film More, and the 2-LP set Ummagumma. Pink Floyd Records will reproduce the vinyl catalogue throughout the year with release dates being announced at regular intervals. In the meantime, all Pink Floyd records are now available on CD, digital and most streaming platforms.

    Special care has been taken to replicate the original packaging. The first batch of releases, mastered by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman will be pressed on 180gram vinyl for optimum sound quality.

    Pink Floyd Records releases will be manufactured and distributed by Warner Music for the UK and Europe and by Sony Music for North America and the rest of the world.

    In general, I think Dublin is a really poor city in which to buy vinyl. Tower has a good stock of new releases, but the two second hand stores you mention, Freebird and Spindizzy, carry a very uninspiring selection of used records, all of which are overpriced. The vast majority of stuff is second-division, mass-produced rock/pop LPs from the '70s and '80s, usually starting at 15 euro each. Compare any of their records for sale with the same on discogs and you will see by how much they are overpriced. As you say, the only thing that makes discogs not practical for those based in Ireland is the P&P rates. (Frankly, some of the quoted costs are ridiculous!)

    The Record Spot, in RAGE on Fade Street, is quite good for vinyl and probably the best in town. Prices are sort of the same as Freebird and Spindizzy but at least they have stock from the top tier of bands (Beatles, Stones, Who and all that stuff, etc. etc.) rather than a load of Joe Jackson and Hall & Oates albums.

    Go to most other major European cities and you'll realise quickly how poorly served we are here. Last year, on a holiday in Spain, I took a trip around 4 or 5 record stores in Valencia (pop: 790,000) and came across tons of stuff I wanted (60s garage, psyche, pop, 70s krautrock, jazz), all at affordable prices (e.g. Bee Gees 'Trafalgar' from 1972, original Spanish pressing, excellent condition: 8eur). Some of the specialist shops I visited had row upon row of original '60s singles by UK, US and Spanish artists. I only had about 3 hours in total to browse and could have spent a whole day going to more places.

    I tend not to buy much vinyl in Dublin any more because of this situation, and save my money for when I go to places like London, Liverpool or the US.

    It's a year since I posted that Dublin analysis Noise Annoys and since then I have fallen more in line with your view.

    I'd love a good root around the London shops. Might get there over the winter. I don't expect cheap but there would be selection and therefore gems.

    Yeah, I realise that it was from 2015, it's just something I've noticed more and more, and it's becoming a bit dispiriting!

    You're right about London - the prices aren't exactly rock bottom but the selection is excellent. Flashback Records, in Islington and Shoreditch, is worth a look.

    Its been quite a while since I've been to Tower since they opened on Dawson St, but the selection of new Vinyl on offer is now huge, albeit still a but pricey :rolleyes: , but a lot of the classics on 180g instead of wobbly thin wax.
    Re-issues are in abundance, lots of new stuff as well, even saw Justin Bleeper on vinyl :eek:
    Reminds me of the old days, vinyl is most definitely back.

    I used to take photos of my record covers but I'm not sure where I saved most of them.

    Here's two copies of Relics by Pink Floyd. One is on EMI, the other is on an EMI subsidiary called Starline.

    I have a third copy on Music For Pleasure.

    I have a lot of other Pink Floyd records including Atom Heart Mother. It has a lock groove at the end, which means that (if your record player doesn't have an auto return tonearm) when it gets to the end of the record it has a groove that keeps playing over and over until you lift the needle.

    I have a good few blues albums by the likes of Blind Willie McTell and Fred McDowell.

    That's some of the more interesting records I have that I can find pictures of. I was going to post my Neil Young bootleg on blue vinyl but I can't upload any more in this post. If anyone is bothered I'll post another reply.

    I have about 400 albums in total and a couple of hundred seven inch singles.

    This is a great album. It was recorded by an audience member so the crowd noise is about as loud as the music. As old bootlegs go though it's pretty good. And Neil Young tells some interesting stories on it, including one about how he wrote another verse for Sugar Mountain but it was one of the worst things he ever wrote.

    I don’t understand the fascination of vinyl.  The quality of the music on vinyl pales to today’s media.  Is it nostalgia, collecting, or something else?  

    Old hippie here.  Went to Woodstock in ’69, Live Aid at JFK in ’85, and have seen over 60 classic rock groups in concerts.  We HAD to put up with scratches and skips on vinyl, but it was always about the music... and vinyl doesn’t cut it.   

    I still have all my old vinyl records, and over here in the states, in thrift shops and garage sales you can find so many classic rock vinyl albums at rock bottom prices… but it holds no interest for me.

    You can ignorantly accuse me of "whataboutism," but what it really is involves identifying similar scenarios in order to see if it holds up when the shoe is on the other foot!
