Obituaries are for prominent people - ordinary people might have death notices, but these had to be paid for, so not every family did this, or could afford to.

The death notices appear in many newspaper - the 'Hatches, Matches and Dispatches' section, but can be very time consuming to search unless you already have a date from a cert. Some newspapers are searchable online on commercial websites - e.g.

These tend to include the more major newspapers - check the dates they have before paying... The NLI in Dublin has a good collection of historic newspapers, most on microfilm, and some bound. Local libraries are also worth checking.

Thanks for that shane. Do you know anything about the Glasnevin website? I paid 8euro for an extended record of a 1903 death but there were 4 other records of people with different surnames and different death years. Would they all be burried in the same plot?

as far as I understand their system what you pay for is a set of records for a plot. The other people may not be related..
