Switzerland got knocked out in 2006, without conceding a goal.
In 2010, they conceded one in 3 games. In 7 games, and 11 hours of football, including half an hour of extra time against Ukraine, they only conceded once, to Mark Gonzalez of Chile.

Was going to say our 2002 unbeaten run (normal time) throughout the whole campaign incl qualifiers must be fairly unique but didn't we feckin lose a playoff to Iran

Steve Staunton has drawn more games than any other player at World Cup Finals, 8 in total from 13 games,

1990

England 1-1
Egypt 0-0
Netherlands 1-1
Romania 0-0 (won on pens)

1994

Norway 0-0

2002

Cameroon 1-1
Germany 1-1
Spain 1-1 (lost on pens)

Karl Heinz Rummenigge and Fabio Cannavaro are next on 7 draws.

In World Cup 2002, 3 of the top 10 in the World in May 2002 weren't there. That said rankings were even dafter then, but interesting stat.

Colombia, Netherlands, Yugoslavia

4 countries which don't exist anymore have made it to the semi finals of the World Cup. 2 of them made it to multiples finals. 1 won it... three times.

Czechoslovakia, West Germany, Yugoslavia and USSR

Throwing my Captain Pedantic hat on, the Germany one is wrong. East Germany dissolved in 1990, joining the Federal Republic of Germany, which has existed since 1949 and continues to do so.

2014: James Rodriguez 3/6. (Muller had 4 in the groups, finishing on 5)
2010: Thomas Muller 1/5. (Half dozen on 3 goals)
2006: Miroslav Klose 4/6. (Leader)
2002: Ronaldo 4/8. (Klose scored all 5 of his goals in the groups)
1998: Davor Suker 2/6. (Half dozen on 3 goals)
Last player to be top scorer after the group stages and went on to win the Golden boot was in 94 - Oleg Salenko. Scored 6 (5 against Cameroon) and they failed to get out of the group stages. Stoichkov eventually shared the award

West Germany, on its own is not a country anymore. West Germany, on its own won the World Cup. It's correct really as far as the statement goes!

Uruguay's 1930 winning team recorded an aggregate goal differential of +12 (and over just 4 games), which remains the highest goal differential for any tournament winner.

Even as a country they were never technically (the best kind of correct) West Germany, that was just a name commonly used to describe them. They were the Federal Republic of Germany before and after unification.

Uruguay are the smallest nation (certainly population wise) left in the current World Cup (only Iceland is smaller from all participants in this year's finals). They have won the World Cup twice, and their population is quite a bit less than Ireland's, so no excuses really.......
