    So how does the naming work?

    If it's a uk thing surely we should called it something else?
    Names will be assigned based on the potential for a disruptive event following liaison between the Duty Forecasters in both Dublin and Exeter.

    Joint UK met office and Met Eireann scheme. Next named storm would be Clodagh

    It should be fun hearing all the pronunciations of Clodagh on the English television forecasts.

    We got 5 new offices in work and there was an election to vote the names. One guy suggested we name them after icelandic volcanos. That got the most votes, but facilities, moved the goalposts and awarded him the prize for funniest submission, and they went with the names of colours instead (boooor-iiiing!).

    We should find out the next time they are doing a poll and nominate some hard to pronounce Irish names for storms. I'd like to hear Kay Burley try to pronounce Dubhaltach, Blaithnaid and Eoghan. My girlfriend has trouble saying Siobhan.

    Storm force 10 from Erris-head to Loop-Head, that's some wind with unpredictable gusts. This storm is a lot lower in-coming this time it seems.

    I can just about decipher those and I'd assume many on here cannot at all, could you post a decoded version?

    SNN also has winds of 43kts G 60!

    Should a drive from Cork to Portlaoise be avoided today? Meeting is from 1-4pm. It's looking pretty hairy to me! Marine forecast at 5am includes riches point in the Orange warning. Waiting for national ones to be updated.

    None of the Cork to portlaoise route looks too bad in terms of Winds so I'd say go for it but take obivous caution.

    How comfortable are you driving in adverse conditions?

    I think it's pretty clear when you read it.

    EIDW= DUBLIN
    EIME=CASEMENT
    EINN=SHANNON
    EICK=CORK.

    e.g. 17/14 means 2 pm on the 17th.
    BECMG means Becoming (wind changing to...)

    Storm force along the coast, gales starting to push inland at 3pm :

    Pressure dropping quite quickly in Enfield. Currently at 997mb and dropped 6mb in the last 3 hours.

    Tight gradient over the west coast :

    HZOvIc3.gif

    That tight gradient coming in on the western flank of the low may be something to keep an eye on as it could bring a shorter spell spell of very gusty winds further north than what the models are hinting at, given that these gradients are on the cooler side of the low, which could help with downdrafts etc.

    That looks scary. May consider taking shelter away from the coasts tommorow if that's the wind! That's well deserving of a red warning!

    Well inside a building today so if there is any damage, it'll be quite a while before I know about it :) I'll try update around 1pm if I can get out

    I'll post updates from West Limerick.

    On another note, any danger of the weather warning being upgraded to Status Red by ME? The Bus Eireann school buses don't run if a Status Red issued. Given they will be running this morning it could catch parents out if upgraded.

    Bit late if they go red now with the buses already on the road this morning. All the kids would need to be collected by parents, putting a lot of extra cars on the road.

    I would guess that it would be red for those areas where the short range model is showing storm force winds reaching the coast, since storm force is 88 km/h and the criteria for red is mean winds over 80 km/h and gusts over 130 km/h.
