    'Talk Talk' by Talk Talk

'In a Big Country' by In a Big Country

    - I'm sure there are loads more.

This seems to have been very common in 1980s, but not at all common today* - when did it start phasing it, and was there any particular reason which drove the trend?

*at least in pop music - I think rappers often still release songs with their name in the title somewhere.

See also: Living in a box. It seemed to be a thing in the 80s alright.

Slightly related - Madness had a version of the song Madness on their first album - the song they took their name from.

    Good call
They also had a track called Madness (Is All In The Mind) on The Rise & Fall.

Those singles weren't debuts (Harvest Home was Big Country's while Mirror Man was Talk Talk's first) but definitely early.

    Rockers liked it:

    Black Sabbath in 1969.
Bad Company had one in 1973.
Steely Dan mention themselves in Show Biz Kids, also 1973.
Killer Queen by Queen was 1974. March Of The Black Queen the year before.
Iron Maiden also a self-titled track on their first album. Not a single though.
    Manowar
    Anthrax
Motorhead early single called Motorhead was actually a Hawkwind cover (Lemmy connection)

    Then
    Wham had Wham Rap
Adam & The Ants did Ant Music, Ant Rap and A.N.T.S.
    Tin Machine

Into the '90s - Belle & Sebastian have s/t track on their first EP

Interesting facts there and, as pointed out, some were not the first at all. I highlighted a few more that was not a band's first single.

However, here is an example of one: Public Image by Public Image Ltd.

I thought of those two alright!

"Immaculate Fools" by Immaculate Fools, a single from early 1985. Not sure if it were their debut though.

A few dance tunes from around 20 years ago, I'm sure there's plenty more

    Ayla - Ayla
    Storm - Storm
    Warrior - Warrior
    Gouryella - Gouryella

    Then a bit earlier, S'Express - Theme from S'Express
