Considering some of the roads around my way, those pictures look fantastic. Dreamy even...

Was out in Little Island last night and saw that Lower Glanmire Road and Horgan's quay are finally being resurfaced. This has been YEARS coming. About bloody time too as these two roads in and out of the city were in apalling condition.

Looked like they were doing something on Anderson's Quay outside Jury's as well on my way back home. That road appeared to be falling into the river.

They had to be done after Irish water were finished.

    so...

new surface on Harbour View road in the north side..

...the area in the circle is way lower than the rest of the road and the manhole cover is sticking out.

So basically they wanted to make it better but they made it worse. It's ridiculous.

    20191208-152449.jpg

can't really see it on the picture but you can DEFINITELY feel it when you drive over... must be very comfortable while you're sitting upstairs in the double decker.

    20191208-152514.jpg

and the road surface itself isn't the best either... looks like a cheap job to me.

    20191208-152526.jpg

honestly I think it should be Germans or Japanese resurfacing the roads, it's the only way to make sure it's done properly.

anybody knows when those houses on Harbour View road will be finished? That pedestrian crossing right outside them is absolutely horrible at this stage...:confused::confused:

oh and Grand parade between that pedestrian crossing and Washington street is a total joke at this stage... gives Cork city this nice dumpesque look...

Two cones on top of each other in the middle of the road...

This place is such a dump! What a s--thole.

If you were to classify a city based on the state of its roads, Cork indeed would be a Shít hole.

Many other cities/towns also in fairness.

I've looked at many of the pics in this thread and a lot of them are recently tarmacked roads. Shocking that the we still dont have either the workers to do the work properly or that we use substandard tarmac, or both.

Compare our roads to France or Spain or even England. Why are ours so much worse?

Need to change the council road service, this bloody half arsed attempt at road repair isn't fit for purpose, lived In the 6 counties for years,no bloody comparison+ it's not all about budget it's about work ethic and mismanagement

    daunt's square, forever in bits.

They will go back and fix it. Then they will do it again two three months later... and again ... and again ... and again...

I don't get this, the road goes slightly up a bit and then there's a drop down... why?

that building could do with some fresh paint too... or nicer graffiti, or both.

IIRC this road in Churchfield has been resurfaced like 5-6 years ago? I'm no expert but resurfaced roads should last decades, not years...

I couldn't stop to take a photo but there is a real crater of a pothole outside kellihers electrical on Tramore Road. It's been filled in repeatedly but never really fixed. Its one of the worst ones I've seen around the city.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,726 ✭✭✭Diabhalta

I always thought the philosophy in Ireland when something breaks, is to replace and not repair.

for example when my alarm in my car started giving trouble I went to two places in cork to have it fixed, they both told me I'm wasting my time and the best thing to do is to replace the whole alarm system... I guess they either didn't want to do it, or didn't know how to fix it.

So why isn't this philosophy applied to the roads too??? If it's in bits why repairing it and wasting money going back fixing it over nad over again? Wouldn't it be better to get rid of it and just resurface it?

Just an observation but the majority of photos are of trench reinstatements. This is work usually undertaken by third parties (ESB, eir, Irish water etc) and not the council.
It is done under license from the council but the majority simply don't have the resources to manage the process properly, and that's assuming a license was applied for...
Funding for road resurfacing comes from central government for the most part, then from rates and local property tax. Local TDs will be calling to your door soon with the election coming up, so you can lobby them or lobby your local councillor to increase either rates or lpt or both.

well the council isn't exactly doing a lot to make sure this is done properly. There should be a certain procedure that will overlook the quality of the work done. Seems to me that they don't care so it is kinda their fault too.

parts of the North Ring roads need resurfacing badly... this bit is horrible. Will it ever be done? I doubt it.

this appeared like three weeks ago in Churchfield... it's way above the rest of the road and after only three weeks it's falling apart.

How isn't this checked by somebody from the council that the work has been done properly??

this pothole filled about a week ago... already below the level of the road.

    20200210-123322.jpg

"repaired" also a week ago. Total garbage, this whole thing needs to go because this is not the solution. Resurfacing the whole area solves the problem.
