Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

What primer for inner sills, repair patches etc

    Looking for advice on what primer to use on inner sills etc after removing the majority of the rust , btw I m repairing an 80's classic . I was recommended red oxide , but reading more I see that some recommend epoxy primers etc . Obviously corrosion prevention is key as I don t want the rust coming back

    Can you sandblast the area..?/...rust can go into remission, but will come back at some stage...give Vinny Byrnes a ring, they will advise and sell you the best stuff for the job..

    Treat the exposed area first with a rust converter like Fertan. You will be amazed at how much rust is left thats not visible to the eye. Fertan or similar will react to the rust and convert to an inert state. Leave it a while then wipe excess clean. It turns into a 'dalmation' style scene with black spots being rusted areas.

    Then primer it, Vinny Byrne will sell you an epoxy rust preventative primer which paints straight over it. Toxic smelly stuff so be carefull.

    Id then recommend a Raptor style stippled finishing coat for protection. Can be bought tintable, so colour match your car.

    I heard the epoxy primers are the job alright , don t think the old grey primers are a lot of use for this application
