Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Applying for Free Travel at 66

    Does anyone know if you need a PSSC before you apply for free travel at 66 or can you get them both at the same time?

    you use the PSSC as your travel pass

    so there is the one process and if you are eligible for free travel it will be ion the card

    What if you can't get a psc, because you have the wrong kind of ppsn?

    SAFE registration and Public Services Card

    The SAFE registration process (pdf) is used to establish and verify your identity. Your free travel pass will be contained in the Public Services Card (PSC) that issues following this registration. You must undergo SAFE registration when requested to do so by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection. Your entitlement to free travel will be disallowed or withdrawn if you don't register.

    Every FT pass is a smartcard now, the old cards are almost finished being phased out. I've seen a total of one in the last 2 years.


    Your PPSN won't matter.

    Thats the old system which, ridiculously, used to stand for "the woman in de marriage ". Those numbers are being phased out you should have already got a new one, ask your local office about that.


    But it won't cause you any hassle, you should apply for the SAFE registration first, then they'll give you the new card, and when you approach your birthday t hey'll post you the FT card version automatically. It won't be valid until after your birthday though, even if it arrives earlier.

    I'm not sure why a person who's a woman should have to do anything extra to a person who's a man, it seems the Dept are being sexist.

    the webpage on the dept webpage opens
    "Everyone aged 66 and over, legally resident and living permanently in the State, is entitled to the Free Travel Scheme."
    I'm not sure why they have to do any safe (and I bet this won't be safe, data will leak) registration.

    the https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/PPSN.aspx webpage also states people with a ppsn with a W suffix have to do something people without a W suffix have to do. Which is sexism. but that's an issue for a diferent board.

    They've now stopped, and Revenue have been encouraging people with the "wife" numbers to ask for proper ones for years now.

    But there are still some hold-outs who haven't been bothered doing so.

    It's not all numbers with a W nor all women who are affected.

    So you would rather the state retained a sexist PPS system, and didn't bother reforming it?
