Has anyone else started reading these yet?

I bought the first issue today.
So far,I have only leafed through it but I think they are amazing-the amount of papers and pull-outs from back then, will make for greatly interesting reading later.

Also has a large print-out of The Proclamation inside, which hopefully I will get framed.

Yep, bought my copy during the week - only getting around to reading it now and I must say I am very impressed!

Not going to light the world on fire but it a nice addition with nice commentary to the centenary celebrations - its actually fascinating to read the front pages including ads and other pieces of information.

I think number 2 may be out in shops tomorrow!

You are very lucky. I've been travelling to several newsagents for the last week and they are all out of stock. One newsagent with foreign staff hadn't a clue what I was asking for and offered me 'The Farmers Journal'!!! I won't give the details of my conversation with them! :D Anyway, Easons tell me they are expecting Pt 2 tomorrow and more of Pt 1 on Wednesday, but couldn't guarantee that. Fingers crossed. However, as I have a subscription to FindmyPast I might be able to track the newspapers down for 1916 in the newspaper archives.

Walked in Easons in Mallow and there was only one copy left - it was all thrown around in a mess but I tidied it up, checked if everything was there and bought it :)

Girl in the shop said people were in all day long for them. There is a leaflet inside where you can pre-order the publication from the newsagent so I think that's what I will do - obviously if they know you will be buying they will put it aside for you which is handy.

My parents used to order newspapers when I was a child, but I wouldn't have thought the big Eason's stores in Dublin would still be doing that.

Well as I said there is a leaflet inside the paper to "give to you newsagent" ... have no idea if Easons will actually keep them .... I'll head in to see if No.2 is available in the morning and ask them.

On the top right-hand corner of the back page,it says that part 2 is "IN THE SHOPS TUESDAY 12 JANUARY 2016".
That's the following week isn't it?

Ah thanks for that, didn't spot that at all! ... I'll check with easons tomorrow will they take the reservation leaflet.

But that makes it even more confusing.
I was pretty sure that this was meant to be a weekly thing, and even though I only bought it today, issue 1 was on the shelves all last week too.
I reckon we should still check the shops tomorrow anyway just in case part 2 does arrive in.

They may have underestimated the demand and have to do a re-run. I wasn't the only one in the shops looking for Pt. 1. I believe they sold out in the first hour!

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,061 ✭✭✭irishfeen

Easons in Mallow not putting away any copies for anyone, there was loads of new copies inside this morning as they just got in another 100 copies... The man behind the counter said they initially ordered 30, then 50 more and now another 100.

He then said they have ordered 150 of No.2 for next week.

Stacks of copies in Spar in Limerick by the people's park when I bought mine 3 days ago.

  • Registered Users Posts: 488 ✭✭The Sun King

Just checked. Still 10-15 copies there if anyone in Limerick is stuck for one.

Yeah next Tuesday is when No.2 is out - I think they might have gave everyone a fortnight to get No.1 and to see what kind of numbers they will have to print. From next Tuesday it will probably be every week.

We're selling this in the supermarket where I work, and this morning I asked Ann(the lady who sorts out all the papers),and she told me that once part 2 comes out next week,it will be coming out weekly after that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,108 ✭✭✭Jellybaby1

I thought it was just the papers over the week of the Easter week in 1916, but just discovered its a 52-part series. Not sure I will continue forking out that much money for it.

We'll I suppose that's the beauty of it too - you can pick and choose which ones you want. Personally I think ill collect them all given the year that's in it.

Yeah, I'd say there'll be an initial interest but I'd say there'll be quite a fall off as the year progresses. To be honest you would really have to have a specialist interest in the topic to peruse those papers in detail every week and those collecting them for the sake of collection will inevitably lose patience especially at nearly four euros every week.

I think they might have fared better had they brought them out fortnightly and given people a bit more breathing space. Collection fatigue would set in less quickly I think. But time will tell I suppose.

I wonder how many times the word "Ulster" was used in the Belfast bulletin.

The shops in my local republican area keep Northern Ireland Euro 2016 cards and stickers yet don't sell this, I have to travel to the nearest town which is 50/50 in terms of religion and politics.

Id have settled for 12 parts one per month, also have them dated as close to the date of re-release

anybody else noticed the quality of the print itself has gotten very hard to read? I've stopped buying them cause of this.

I have noticed that myself. Did your great grandparents have netter eyesight or something? On a serious note who do we complain to? Certainly not worth the price now.

Interesting stuff reported in the papers that is not the big news - the Farmer from Enniscorthy who sued his daughter for not looking after him after his wife died. The judge awarding him £2s10 because his tea was cold.
It must have been a really hot Easter weekend as there are multiple reports of drownings all over the country from people having a dip!
The adverts are also interesting - I see you could book a room in the Spa Hotel in asking the operator to call Lucan 24.

Apparently it was, the weather was very fine that Easter week.
A quote from the Irish Times of an event that took place 100 years ago today.
However, as events unfurled, Wednesday instead became the day on which 2,000 untested soldiers and officers from the Sherwood Foresters marched through Ballsbridge en route to the city centre. With the hot sun beating down upon them, the doyens of the RDS organised fresh lemonade to quench their thirst.

Is it me or is this an over priced rag with bearly readable print?

At nearly €4 a pop, a couple of good books on the subject would be a better spend imho.

Just another attempt at cashing in on 1916 'mania'.
I see one 'Archive Case' (a glorified cardboard box) to keep them in is €19.50.
