    What would Ireland have been like if Brian Ború, or his sons for that matter, had survived the Battle of Clontarf?

    I wonder would Ireland have had its own distinct feudal system, or would we have successfully warded off a Norman Invasion (or 'Invitation' as it were).

    He'd have had a lot of work ahead of him - Brian was seventy when he was killed, so it would have been the son (killed in the battle) that would have to do the work.

    Either way, the Northern Ui Neill would have had to be re-conquered, and Leinster kept pacified. The Ui Neill were used to rotating the nominal High Kingship between them, so not sure if they'd have accepted a formal dynasty coming from the Dal gCais, those upstarts from the Shannon...

    So it would have been his son who would have done the hard work up North.
