When a moderator makes a mess of something and say, for example, closes a thread is there any point in reporting that post for some resolution? We’re often told to do it but surely the report will just go to that moderator and they can ignore it. What’s the process behind it?

Reporting a post is a bit redundant in a scenario like that. The better approach would be to PM the mods in question and discuss it with them. If an agreement or understanding can't be reached that way, then you could consider approach the cmods for them.

If it's the thread I am thinking of it was very rightly closed.

And yes you can take it to PM with a mod, or CMod, or even post details here if you are not satisfied, but the reason given by the mod when closing the thread is entirely appropriate

If you think there are other posts in the forum that equally contravene site rules by encouraging illegal activity please report them

I’ve seen people being told before to report the post. So we shouldn’t?

Also, every second post on that whole form encourages illegal activity. That was the point I made to the moderator in the report, though there was zero reply naturally.

Reporting a post just brings that post to the mods attention, it doesn't start a dialogue, it's a one way mechanism. Any proper discussion can only be done by PMs.
