    I dont know who owns them but they are used when someone has died suddenly (ie murder or unexpected sudden death, suicide etc).

    They are used to transport the body to the coroners for a post mortem.

    They use these to protect the chain of evidence should there be a court case if foul play is suspected.

    Undertakers use them for transporting bodies from where people passed away, such as hospitals, hospices etc, to where they are prepared for burial/cremation. They are also used to transport people to medical schools if they have donated their bodies to medical science.

    I think they're to do with the state pathologist? Seem to be a hand full of them about the place and only seem used in conjunction with a potential garda investigation..?

    I thought it was more about the State Pathologist/City Morgue than coroner?

    State Pathologist/coroner same thing. Its very Inspector Morse anyway.

    Remember the body is evidence so must be preserved.

    I would have though somebody in the Armed Response Unit or any Garda would have come across these many times. :confused:

    Nope, these belong to undertakers and as such are no more secure than a traditional Hearse.

    A traditional Hearse is a realitively expensive vehicle, substantially more so than a Vito or estate etc with a deck fitted, so it makes sense to use the real hearse when it's actually required, using the more discreet 'first call hearse' / 'private ambulance' for removals.

    It's supposedly also less distressing for residents of nursing homes to see an 'ambulance' as opposed to a Hearse.

    I work in the industry building these and real Hearses.

    Interestingly though, on the continent Vito type Hearses are taking over from more usual Hearses, they don't do the whole follow the hearse to the grave.
