Is it possible to repeat year 2 in Trinity to get better moderatorship course

Hi, Son has just got his Moderatorship course for year 3 in TCD Science and it is his least favoured of them all
He just scraped through his Year 2 exams and got a pass (had been a very difficult year outside of college and he did amazing in getting the pass IMO)

He Does not want to do the option he was offered as has no interest in it at all as it is miles away from the field he wants to go into on graduating.

Could anyone tell me if it is possible for someone in that position to repeat year 2 and hopefully get better results at end of year exams and then hopefully get the Moderatorship course he would favour

Don't know if it's possible, but him speaking with his assigned tutor (not necessarily from his area of study at all) and/or the director of undergraduate teaching in his school would be some helpful steps.

BTW, the college can be fairly frosty speaking to the parents of students rather than the students themselves, so it's best that he leads all the engagement with college.

Thanks for the reply. he was talking to his Tutor earlier I believe, but was not given any hope,
The Tutor had mentioned something about, if he had know of his circumstances this past year at the time then he might have been able to do something at the time. But as he has sat and passed the exams there is nothing he can do.

Lad is absolutely distraught, as the course is the polar opposite to what he really is interested in.

I definitely would not be contacting the college myself, Son could be fairly frosty to me also

What's the course he got offered. He can always do his preferred course as a postgrad.

TCD Progression and Awards regulations say no:

    TCD Regs
    Rule 8: Reassessment
... Students are not permitted to present for reassessment in any module for which they have achieved a pass grade, in order to improve their academic performance.

His only hope would be to persuade them to give him his preferred option with the grades he already has. That will only be possible this year if there's room to squeeze in an extra person in the course he wants because they won't bump someone else with higher grades who's already been told they've got the place. So if it's a course that has limited lab bench spaces (for example) then it simply won't be possible.

In such circumstances, his tutor could try to persuade the College to admit him to his desired option in 2020-21 on ad misericordiam (personal circumstances) grounds.

But in reality he might be better off simply trying to do it as a postgrad instead as suggested by vriesmays. Certainly worth exploring to see how possible that would be, if he was applying for such a postgrad having done the unwanted moderatorship option.

If he has a fee demand, better not pay it until he knows where he stands because he won't get a refund.
