Hi folks just looking for a bit of help here.

Long story short my 8 year old daughter is in a lot of pain with with one of her back teeth. I could not get an appointment for her anywhere so went private and was in the hermitage in lucan today for a consultation.

They told me she will need to go to Blackrock clinic where it will cost €1750 before the tooth is even extracted, at the present time I'm out of work due to the pandemic and cannot afford that.

Does anyone know of any public dentists anywhere in Dublin that there is no long waiting lists ?

That's just madness! First of all what did they say is actually wrong with her tooth?

I hope after paying out for consultation you have at least that information.

There is no need to be going near private clinic, especially if you don't have health insurance.

The next step if it was me would be too link in with your normal dentist for advice.

It was her mother who brought her today so I'm just having the info relayed to me it's a bad infection and needs to come out.

She had problems with this tooth last year and we got her an appointment at the local dentist, he was in the process of taking the tooth out had administed the anaesthetic, but my daughter freaked out and wouldn't let him go any further unfortunately and we could not calm her down sufficiently for the dentist to continue.

Reason we went private is the local dentist told us we could be waiting up to 18 months now for an appointment with him.

My guess is this is a general anaesthesia extraction. The bulk of the cost is for theatre/ anaesthetist/recovery monitoring rather than for the actual extraction.

Op, the local HSE has responsibility for children under 16, if the Dentist you attended was the HSE, unfortunately waiting lists for GA are that long. The only alternative is to have it out with local anaesthetic, which of course is a lot cheaper, faster and safer, but does require patient cooperation, this unfortunately seems to be a problem.

OK so its a little bit more complicated if she needs to be put under general anesthetic.

As Dav010 said your local HSE dental clinic will see children under 15 for emergency appointments.

I don't know where your based but look it up and you will find your local clinic and ring them ASAP. They used to have walk in ones but not at the moment with Covid.

At least get the advice from your local HSE clinic.

Only other thing I can think of is a normal dentist but one who specialises in dealing with children.

Yes you would have to pay but it would be hundreds not thousands. They might be able to put her at ease and take it out under local anesthetic but that would be up to you and them to decide if she is able for that she may not be as it didn't work the first time.

I real hope it works out for you god love her.

Thanks very much for all your help folks. I am going to ring my local hse clinic in the morning.

Smiles was also recommened to me i, was told they can administer gas. Not sure if it's the same gas as what I got in james street when I was a child while getting dental work which knocked me out completely.

    I'll find out tomorrow.

Hey there, hope you found a dentist.
If not, use the local directories to find the dentist.
A friend of mine suggested using local directories to find doctors near me. I moved to Toronto last year, and I had root canal treatment from Ohio. When I had dental problems, I struggled to find an affordable doctor. The forum and some local directories helped me a lot to find an emergency dentist.
